Westbourne School: Boarding Schools in Yorkshire

Westbourne School is unique in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It is the only co-educational independent school for boys and girls catering for 3 to 16 year olds. Westbourne School enjoys a fine tradition of excellence in education. We are based in the historic Broomhill area of the city, less than 15 minutes drive from the Peak District National Park. The school revolves around two sites only yards apart. It is here that we nurture the school's principle of educating girls and boys for life – not least thanks to a seamless transition between Junior and Senior Schools. The Westbourne curriculum is not only the subjects taught in lessons, but also all the planned activities in our KS2 residential programme and annual trips and events that we organise in order to enrich the children's experience and promote learning and personal growth and development. It includes the 'hidden curriculum' that the children learn from the way they are treated and the way they are expected to behave. Homework is set appropriately and progressive as children move through the school and links with our MAP's programme which enables pupils to extend their learning and thinking in specific curriculum areas. Senior School Curriculum The programme of study in Key Stage 3 ( Year7 – Year 9) includes Art, Music, Geography, History, ICT, Music, Games and PE, Design Technology as well as PSHE and two modern foreign languages. Throughout Senior School, Maths, Science and English are taught back to back so pupils may be 'set' according to ability. This means that all individuals have the opportunity to work at his or her most appropriate level in these core subjects. The core curriculum for GCSE Key Stage 4 (Year 10 – Year 11) consists of : English English Literature Mathematics Physics Chemistry Biology In addition to this, pupils choose options from a wide range of subjects including Media Art Drama Music Sports science History Geography Design Technology Media Studies Spanish French ICT Business Communication Systems There are regular outings and journeys abroad, including Skiing and French/Spanish language and sports trips. Any idea for a school trip from students themselves is welcomed and the practicalities explored. Extra curricular activities currently offered include theatre and drama visits, climbing, chess, Concert Band, bridge, book clubs and running, but the list changes constantly as it is pupil driven.
