Twyford School is set on an extensive and attractive 20 acre campus to the southern edge of the historic and beautiful city of Winchester. Our site has outstanding views of the South Downs and our pupils can explore the natural world in a safe and secure environment. We are an independent boarding and day co-educational school for children from Nursery to Year 8.
Our pupils enjoy first-class facilities. Classrooms are light and bright, with class sizes of 18 maximum. Specialist teaching areas include a large music room, an excellent sports hall and well-stocked library, in addition to fine science, art and technology and ICT facilities. Pupils are encouraged to develop their talents across a range of sports and enjoy regular access to our splendid swimming pool.
Great care is taken to create and maintain a happy, family atmosphere. Our pupils learn the skills of give and take, cooperation, getting along with others, fair play, honesty and above all kindness. A rich creative curriculum sets our children on the path to becoming lifelong thinkers and learners.
We welcome children of all religious denominations and the major Christian festivals of Christmas, Easter, and Harvest Festival are celebrated by everyone.
A close relationship between home and school is essential and we ensure effective communications by providing plenty of formal and informal occasions for parents and staff to exchange views on academic and social development. It is also customary for parents to drop their children off and then to take the opportunity to talk with members of staff.

The Boarding House provides a safe, fun, family orientated and comfortable environment for your child to develop holistically. Boarding at Twyford prepares children for their future senior school in many ways. The majority of our children leave at the end of Year 8 to go to boarding schools. Boarding at Twyford provides your child with the required self-confidence and independence to manage effectively the transition from a prep school boarding house to a senior school boarding house. But for those who will not board in their next school, our structure permits fun and exciting opportunities for children to develop their tenacity and resilience as they are in a crucial stage of early adolescence.
Being part of the boarding community develops in a child confidence, a sense of community and significant independence. We watch in wonder as our boarders naturally demonstrate skills of empathy, respect for others and a sense of duty. Each academic member of staff at Twyford carries out an evening duty and supervises a varied programme of activities aimed at stimulating and challenging those who board.
Pupils may board from Year 4. Many parents prefer to use flexi-boarding when their children are younger and by the time they reach the senior part of the school, Years 7 and 8, more board on a weekly basis.
International pupils are very welcome at Twyford and we have an excellent record of placing boys and girls at English senior schools. Overseas boarders go to local guardians from their last commitment on a Saturday until Monday morning.
Everyone will play in a school or house team and be involved in our inter-house sports competitions. It is incredible to think that on many Wednesday and Saturday afternoons 25 School teams across the various age groups may have been in action at the same time. Twyford School has had notable national success in cricket, hockey, netball, swimming and athletics, in particular.
Every child at Twyford has the opportunity to experience, understand, create and enjoy music. The Music Department is extremely well resourced with ten teaching rooms and a large rehearsal studio. We also have a beautiful mid-Victorian chapel and two-manual pipe organ. Every pupil from Nursery to Year 8 has a weekly class music lesson and a weekly singing practice; 80% of pupils also choose to have individual lessons on instruments and/or singing. Approximately 300 individual music lessons are timetabled each week! There are usually one or two children each year that achieve grade 7 or 8 on their instruments. These children are often awarded scholarships and exhibitions at their chosen Senior Schools.
We have a full Symphony Orchestra for children in Years 3 to 8, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Wind Band, Jazz Band and flexible opportunities for chamber music. We have a long-standing arrangement to train pupils to sing in operas at the Grange. Twyford children have performed in Tosca, Queen of Spades, La Boheme and Oliver! The Senior Choir recently toured the Champagne region of France and we are exploring tour ideas with various contacts in the USA.
he Art and Design departments are housed in light, spacious purpose built studios. Twyford pupils are encouraged to explore and nurture ideas to produce paintings, drawings, sculptures, models and ceramics. We ensure pupils explore and utilise all manner of media to become aware of the possibilities that stimulate the creative mind.
Children are given opportunities, both in the classroom and on school trips, to investigate and develop a number of personal skills to create images and artefacts.
In Year 6 potential art scholars and pupils with high interest and ability are invited to join the Extra Art evening sessions. Here they develop their own style in an environment conducive to exploration and absorption.
Design and Technology is centred on focussed practical tasks using a ‘design and make’ approach towards problem solving activities. In the workshop each project increases in complexity and requires the pupil to learn new skills and techniques. These include traditional hand skills through to Computer Aided Design and laser cutting.
Each year pupils are regularly entered for competitions including designing and building a go cart for the Greenpower Challenge at Goodwood race track, which we have won twice in the last five years.
