Located in the beautiful University town of St Andrews, the St Leonards provides top quality boarding and day education for boys and girls aged 5 -18 with boarding available from age 12.
Three stages: Junior, Senior and Sixth Form
After GCSEs/IGCSEs, they offer the world-leading International Baccalaureate (IB), a global alternative to Scottish Highers and English A Levels.
St Leonards has largely followed the English, rather than the Scottish education system. Pupils take GCSEs and IGCSEs rather than Scottish Standard Grades. Sixth Form students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. St Leonards is an IB World School, one of only three schools in Scotland to have attained this status

St Leonards School, formerly St Leonards and St Katharines School, is an independent school founded by the University of St Andrews in the nineteenth century. It is located in St Andrews, Fife, on the east coast of Scotland, today situated on one site in private grounds, just south of the town's historic cathedral and within the walls of the medieval Priory. Although originally established in 1877 by University of St Andrews professors and their wives amid the increased demand for women's education the school is now fully co-educational.
St Leonards boasts one of the most impressive campuses in Scotland, an expansive piece of land incorporating historic landmarks, purpose built facilities, vast green spaces and magnificent views of the sea and surrounding town and countryside.
The historic priory walls which bound the campus might be ancient but, within them, our facilities are thoroughly modern. They include:
Purpose built music school and auditorium
Indoor swimming pool
Science, digital language and ICT laboratories
Award winning school dining hall
Dedicated art and drama studios
Squash courts
Astroturf playing pitches
Expansive grass playing fields
In August 2012 work on a £2.5m redevelopment of the Junior School was completed, giving the youngest St Leonards pupils an exciting, state-of-the-art space in which to begin their education. The redevelopment saw the construction of a brand new building and refurbishment of existing facilities.
The School Council is committed to a continuing programme of improvement and development of the School facilities. Recent projects have included the refurbishment of the award-winning School dining hall, swimming pool and upgrading of ICT facilities. Bishopshall was our first boarding house to undergo a full renovation and refurbishment, reopening in September 2016, and Ollerenshaw and St Rule are next
Pupils at St Leonards can board from the age of 12 and they currently have a boarding community of up to 130. St Leonard' s four Boarding Houses – Bishopshall, Ollerenshaw, St Rule East and St Rule West – offer friendly, welcoming and safe environments in which our pupils have the opportunity to make the most of all the fantastic opportunities that life at St Leonards brings.
Each of the residences is equipped with study bedrooms, common rooms, kitchen facilities, computing facilities and games rooms. Wireless internet access (monitored) is available, enabling our pupils to stay in contact with family and friends. Students receive nutritious meals and regular snacks, including brunch at the weekends, in the Central Dining Room. St Leonards is one of the only schools in the country to have received the Scottish Consumer Council’s Healthy Living Plus Award.
At St Leonards Junior School, children aged 5-12 learn and develop the core skills which are essential for life-long achievement. Both the Junior and Senior Schools are integrated to ensure pupils enjoy a seamless progression through the school.
In the Senior School, pupils aged 12-16 study for formal qualifications – GCSEs and IGCSEs. A one-year course (also involving GCSEs and IGCSEs) known as the Pre-IB1 is available as a means of preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The forward-thinking curriculum is designed to maximise the potential of each and every student. They are ultimately prepared for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the two-year course which all St Leonards pupils take in the Sixth Form (S5/S6).
Sports covered include rugby, lacrosse, hockey, skiing, tennis, cricket, football swimming, golf, judo, water sports, kayaking, surfing, rock climbing, horse riding and athletics.
