This is a place like no other: we are a state boarding school that provides life-enriching opportunities for all students to rival those of the independent sector. Our students have access to excellent facilities that include an equestrian centre, a swimming pool and extensive sporting arenas. The school is set in 260 acres of beautiful parkland landscaped by Capability Brown, but is close enough to major transport hubs, and London, to ensure ease of accessibility. Students are taught a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum by highly skilled teachers to ensure that they are able to progress to their chosen education and career path. They also benefit from first class wraparound care provided by compassionate, knowledgeable boarding staff. We take the time to get to know our young people so that we can best meet their needs in their ‘home-from-home’. Our co-curricular offer is substantial and progressive, and our young people are able to experience exciting new adventures, as well as hone existing skills.
We believe that high quality teaching and use of assessment are the key to making a great curriculum a reality for all students. Our school’s pedagogical approach is Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction where reviewing material, questioning, sequencing concepts and modelling, and practice will allow our students to progress to excellence in all subject areas. We also draw on the Embedding Formative Assessment Programme, where teachers use a variety of techniques to ensure we can measure the progress of all our students throughout our lessons, and are therefore able to support them the best we can.
JUNIOR PE & SPORT
PE is an important and integral part of the Junior Curriculum; the aim is to introduce and embed a healthy lifestyle early in our pupils’ lives. We are blessed with fabulous sport facilities and extensive grounds; which enable us to offer a wide range of sporting activities within our PE lessons.
The government provides all Junior Schools with PE and Sports Premium funding which is used to ensure the necessary equipment, coaches and facilities support outstanding PE lessons. Pupils not only have PE lessons with their class teacher but also take part in PE lessons led by specialist teachers once a week. In addition, pupils may choose to do sports as part of the Co-Curriculum Activities Programme. This programme offers an extensive range of activities from trampolining to kayaking.
In Years 3-6, pupils take part in two timetabled PE lessons each week. The aim is to introduce and a wide range of skills and sports during these PE lessons, including: football, netball, rugby, hockey, cross country, gymnastics, athletics, rounders, dance and cricket. A considerable number of these sports and more, such as basketball and tri-golf are also offered as part of the Co-Curriculum Programme.
Swimming is a key part of the PE curriculum and pupils in the Junior School take part in weekly swimming lessons with a specialist swimming teacher. In lessons every child’s needs are accounted for; this allows for every child to have the opportunity of meeting the National Curriculum objective to swim 25m unaided. Swimming sessions are also available as part of the Co-Curriculum Programme. These involve swim team training, for more advanced pupils, development squads, along with more relaxed supervised sessions where children can just enjoy being in the pool.
SENIOR SPORT
We have a proud record of success in team sports. Many pupils have achieved representative honours in Surrey County Teams. A range of individual sports is available including athletics, swimming and riding. We have our own horses, indoor and outdoor sand schools and instructors. We seek to introduce a healthy lifestyle from the start. Our aim is that sporting activities at school will be continued in adult life.
