New Hall School in Chelmsford, Essex is one of great British boarding schools. New Hall School is a leading independent boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3-18. Founded in 1642, New Hall School, Chelmsford, is the oldest Catholic school in the UK that has always taken girls, and the largest Catholic boarding and day school in England.
At New Hall we operate the highly successful ‘diamond model’ structure, i.e. co-education in the Preparatory School (ages 3-11), single-sex education in the Boys’ Division and Girls’ Division (11-16) and co-education in the Sixth Form (16-18). In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds: the benefits of a co-educational environment together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 and 4. The provision of single-sex education during formative years enables students to grow in confidence, whilst enjoying an education that is specifically tailored and that recognises the different ways in which boys and girls learn.
New Hall is a strong and thriving boarding school, set in a stunning location, just 30 minutes by train from London. Students can board from ages 7-18 in one of six boarding houses. High academic expectations and achievements, together with outstanding pastoral care and exceptional drama, music and sports facilities and provision, together make New Hall a wonderful place to be educated.

Our Catholic foundation and ethos is central to all that we do, supported by the work of our lively Chaplaincy Team. At New Hall, a special value is placed on love and forgiveness, which encourage relationships based on trust, kindness, self-respect and care for those in need.
Students meet every week in our historic and beautiful Chapel, which has been a place for daily prayer for over 200 years. It is a peaceful place where those of all faiths and none can find stillness and calm. It provides a sanctuary from a busy world.
Students participate in the planning of liturgies and take an active role in various ministries as servers, readers and musicians. The acoustics of the Chapel enhance the fine liturgical music that enriches the worship.
The aims at New Hall are to provide a broad and balanced education, rooted in the School’s Catholic foundation and to inspire students to develop their talents to their full potential. These aims are met with students achieving consistently outstanding GCSE and A Level examination results.
In 2023 at A Level, 12% of grades were A* with 38% of all grades at A*/A. Over two thirds of grades were A*-B.
In 2023 at GCSE, 45% of all grades were at 7+ (A*/A), with 88% of grades at 5+. A quarter of grades were at 8+ (A*
