About the school
We are a leading Catholic independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18, set in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Our academic results are excellent, our extra-curricular activities plentiful, our pastoral care exemplary – but above all else, Mayfield is a happy school. We hope this website will give you a clear sense of why we are so proud of our School and our pupils. Our latest ISI inspection report states that the quality of education at Mayfield is „excellent”. Country Life magazine described Mayfield as „one of the finest schools in the land.”
Facilities of this leading boarding school are outstanding – all weather tennis and netball courts, heated indoor swimming pool, dance academy covering all types of dance – from ballet to hip-hop, music school, one of the best creative art departments in the country with Art, Ceramics and Textiles up to, and including Pre-U. One of our USPs must be our on-site Equestrian Centre with stabling for 28 horses, Olympic sized outdoor and indoor sand schools there is an opportunity to compete at the highest level but also just enjoy a weekly hack. We have a magnificent new Sixth Form Boarding School Centre which enables the Year 12 & 13s to enjoy a more ‘university’ type of environment before moving on. With 4 boarding houses our boarders enjoy their own space as well as being part of a community

Academic life
We have a wide range of exceptionally successful Academic Departments. Inspirational teaching, from highly-qualified and dedicated staff, enables our girls to blossom in expected and, often, in quite unexpected areas. This is due to the equal value which we place on every subject and to the breadth of curriculum we offer. Girls are always encouraged to do their best and given the confidence they need to succeed.
This development of an independent mind is reflected in the pupils’ A Level choices. Unusually in a girls’ school, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology often have the highest number of students enrolled, but the girls will often combine these subjects with a creative art, or a social science. The freedom to combine an eclectic set of subjects at A Level is characteristic of the School and equips Mayfield girls with qualifications to take them successfully into all walks of life.
The achievement of excellent examination results is important and Mayfield girls take each set of examinations in their stride, and invariably perform well above expectation. Our focus is not, however, exclusively to this end, and we encourage a balanced approach to academic studies, and to the development of the whole person.
Sport and culture
The School has superb facilities including an AstroTurf, six netball courts/eight tennis courts, a modern Dance Studio, indoor heated 25 metre swimming pool, fully equipped fitness room, and a well-equipped gymnasium. The School also boasts impressive riding facilities, with a purpose built Equestrian Centre situated on the School site.
Each year group has the opportunity to represent the School in competitive fixtures mid-week and at the weekend through the extensive extra-curricular PE on offer. In the Autumn Term, Hockey is the main competitive sport, moving to Netball then Cricket, Athletics and Tennis, throughout the academic year. Training sessions are offered for all players at all levels of experience. The School enters local, county, regional and national competitions, and has a strong record of sporting achievement and excellence. Mayfield is fortunate to count among its pupils a number of extremely talented girls, competing at county and national standard in Hockey, Netball, Cricket, Rowing, Dance, Athletics and Riding.
The variety of extra-curricular clubs on offer ranges from Fencing and Zumba, to Badminton, Personal Training, Lifeguarding and Ballet. The extensive Tennis programme at Mayfield includes year-round private coaching from South Coast Tennis Academy (SCTA), a selected Futures Squad, and Summer Tennis Teams.

The School is located within a beautiful historic village in the picturesque county of East Sussex. Less than 50 minutes from the centre of London by Train, 40 minutes’ drive from Gatwick and about an hour from Heathrow putting us in a perfection location but within a safe and secure environment.
