A level and International Baccalaureate
Malvern College offers pupils entering the Sixth Form an exceptional degree of choice, providing an extensive range of subjects at both A level and in the International Baccalaureate. At Malvern, we have been running both Sixth Form programmes of study for 20 years, providing pupils with unrivalled professional expertise and experience.
In the Sixth Form, courses are offered at A-Level in art, business studies, classical civilisation, design and technology, drama and theatre studies, economics, English literature, geography, Greek, history, history of art, key skills, Latin, mathematics, modern languages (French, German, Spanish), music, music technology, physical education, politics and the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics). Further courses are available at International Baccalaureate level and special arrangements are sometimes made for other courses upon request
Pre-Sixth Form Course
The Pre-Sixth Form course was introduced in September 2005. This course is intended for pupils whose assessment tests, academic background and standard of English indicate that they are capable of completing the individual specifications in one year and making a success of the Public Examinations. All pupils have the opportunity to gain entry into the Sixth Form to study either a GCE Advanced level course of the International Baccalaureate. However, entry into the Pre Sixth Form does not guarantee a place in the Sixth Form.
Aims of the Course
The course has been designed for pupils who are not native speakers of English with two main objectives.
To provide pupils with an introduction to all aspects of life at Malvern College. It is hoped that this integration year will allow for seamless entry into the Sixth Form where the pupil is able, from the outset, to concentrate on their studies. In the Sixth Form pupils are free to choose to study either GCE Advanced Levels of the International Baccalaureate.
For the pupils to be taught exclusively in English to allow for a considerable improvement in their English regardless of their standard on commencement of the course.
The Academic Programme
Pupils will study the following subjects: English, English as an additional language (leading to IELTS examination), Mathematics, Two Sciences (from a choice of Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Either History or Geography, Either French, Spanish or Latin (if previously studied for at least two years), Pupils may also study for a GCSE in their own native language, For Mathematics, French and Spanish, and the pupils will be taught with the rest of our Year 11 pupils. For all other subjects they will be taught in their Pre-Sixth Form group.
The pupils’ timetables will also include Physical Education and Games. They will have the opportunity of choosing from a wide range of co-curricular activities in Sport, Art and Drama
The school has a strong sporting tradition. For boys’ sports, some Malvernians would consider the College to be best known as a football school although its cricket sides have also produced players who have gone on to play at international level. Traditionally, sport for boys used to be split between the original 'major sports’ of football, cricket, and rackets (rugby was added later), and 'minor sports’. The girls’ main sports are hockey and lacrosse in the winter, lacrosse and netball in the Lent Term and tennis and rounders in the summer. The College also plays a multitude of other sports such as Rackets, Fives, Athletics, Tennis, Squash, Croquet, Basketball, Badminton and Polo. Some boys’ hockey and girls’ football are played
Activities offered in addition to the academic curriculum include sports , Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, First Aid, Orchestra/Band, Orienteering, Outdoor Pursuits, Photography, Practical Engineering, Riding, and Skiing. A wider range of activities depending on the demand may also be available and include, Ballet/Dance, Ceramics, Chess, Choir, Climbing, Community Service, Current Affairs, Dancing, Debating/Public Speaking, Design/Technology, Drama/Theatre Studies, Life Saving, First Aid, Outdoor Pursuits, Photography, Practical Engineering, Textiles, and Young Enterprise.
