Introduction
Founded in 1827, Loretto is Scotland’s oldest boarding school. The School made up of two parts, the Junior School (0–12) and the Senior School (12–18). This leading Scottish private boarding school provides an all-round education for 600 boys and girls aged 3-18. This Scotland co-ed boarding school is set within 85 acres of beautiful grounds. Loretto is located in the small coastal town of Musselburgh, six miles from the cultural centre of Edinburgh. And 30 minutes by car from Edinburgh Airport. There is a strong personal tutor system and much emphasis is placed on the highly regarded Sixth Form programme and competitive university entrance seminars. English for speakers of other languages, and support for stretching gifted and less able pupils are also available. There is a rigorous academic programme and high expectations. GCSEs and A-levels are studied.

Academic life
Sport and culture
Acknowledged as a centre of excellence for its music, drama and art, Loretto is an all-Steinway piano school, has its own theatre, Chapel, recording studio and radio station. Many former pupils now pursue successful careers in this field. 2015 saw the Loretto unveiling of a state-of-the-art indoor golf centre. Combined with the use of the local Championship links golf courses and on-site facilities, our own Academy is the leading golf school in Europe. Former pupil Graeme Simmers, 2001/02 Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews, says: ‘Loretto encouraged me to make the most of myself in every aspect of my life, uncovering not only a competitive edge, but a love of sportsmanship that has been a guiding influence in my life ever since.’ Loretto continues to invest heavily in its sports coaching by providing professional coaching all-year round. Scottish international, John Blain heads the cricket, Neil Allan, Scottish Hockey Coach of the Year 2011, coaches hockey and ex-professional, Rob Hardwick leads the rugby.
Extracurricular activities
Loretto is constantly busy with pupils making a regular commitment to extracurricular activities. LAMDA drama and singing exams are popular as is being a member of the famous Loretto Pipe Band who recently played with Sir Paul McCartney. Daily commitments of activities and sport are supplemented with Community Service, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Arctic expeditions and the Combined Cadet Force.
