Morning school starts at 8.40 am with a short registration period which is followed by chapel, assembly or a form/tutor Group meeting. The final lesson ends at 4.15 pm although school may finish earlier than this on games and activity afternoons. The Library remains open for private study until 5.30 pm.
  
  During the week, pupils in Years 7 and 8 have two games afternoons. Pupils in Year 9 and above have a games afternoon and an activities afternoon, when Combined Cadet Force, Community Service, Conservation, the International Leadership Programme, a range of interest-based activities and a variety of sports are offered. There is a busy programme of sports fixtures against other schools on Saturdays, but no Saturday lessons.

About the school

The first hard evidence of the school’s existence, an unpaid bill,
dates from 1399 but it is likely that the school had been functioning
for some years before then. Its first Charter was granted by Henry VIII
and confirmed by Queen Elizabeth I. The school’s coat of arms and motto,
Semper Eadem (Always the Same), are those of Elizabeth I. Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II is the school’s Visitor. Early school buildings were
located in the town centre but in 1852 the school moved into new
buildings opposite Christchurch Park and has remained on this site ever
since.
