Costume Design. Pre-professional Dance Program
Grier Dance includes an auditioned co-curricular program for young women interested in dancing professionally. Dancers enrolled in the program attend their college-preparatory academic classes in the morning and spend the remainder of their day, from 12:30-6:30, in the dance studio. During this time, girls in the pre-professional program take ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary classes. These dancers join other students in hip hop, tap, and stretch/strengthening classes for a total of 30 hours of dance instruction each week. No matter the genre, a dancer in our pre-professional program will be well prepared for college and company auditions. Riding at Grier School offers students the opportunity to develop skills through several programs designed to help riders achieve their equestrian goals. Anywhere from two to five days a week, students ride with Grier’s professional riding staff. The facilities include four barns, two outdoor rings, two heated indoor arenas, and miles of trails. In order to accommodate all skill levels, the Grier School owns 50 horses which range from the quietest of horses up to high-level show-jumpers. Grier also offers boarding for privately owned horses.
The school’s equestrian program emphasizes two styles of riding: English, which encompasses the classic hunter/jumper style, and Western which focuses on the horsemanship and reining disciplines. The fundamentals taught within the Grier School Stables’ program stretch far beyond these two formats—our staff is proficient in an array of disciplines and willing to help tailor each individuals needs into the daily program. University Park Airport (SCE), which serves over 280,000 total passengers annually, has undergone a number of improvements over the past few years. The latest enhancements are the addition of an operating Airport Traffic Control Tower, a renovation to the airline terminal and expanded terminal parking. In addition, we continually look to improve commercial air service to complement the existing service of Delta, United and US Airways. We meet regularly with airline representatives to discuss service to new destinations. Daily jet service to a major hub in the Midwest for improved domestic and international connections is currently a priority as is our effort to restore service to the southeast U.S. It is 30 miles from school.
Altoona Airport (AOO) is served by U.S. Airways with numerous flights in and out each day, all of which connect through Washington, Dulles. This airport is actually south of Altoona, located about 35 miles from Grier’s campus.

From points SOUTH, Interstate 99 comes all the way to Tyrone so there is uninterrupted interstate highway access from the major cities to the south of the school (Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, and Columbus, OH) The Tyrone exit is Exit 48. Once off of I-99, follow Rt. 453 SOUTH for approximately 2 1/4 miles. The Grier School entrance is on the left. Since Grier is a boarding school for girls that values privacy, there is only one sign indicating the school’s entrance. For this reason, it is advised that visitors begin to slow down and prepare for the turn into the entrance just after they pass the small road sign for „Birmingham.” The small village of Birmingham is adjacent to the school.
From points WEST travelers may follow Rt. 22 EAST from Pittsburgh as it comes through the Allegheny Highland region of Pennsylvania. Follow Rt. 22 EAST to the point where it intersects with I-99. Follow I-99 NORTH to exit 48 in Tyrone. Travelers coming from Cleveland or the northern part of Ohio should follow I-80 EAST to exit 123 at Woodland. From there, follow Routes 322 EAST and 350 EAST which connects to I 99 just north of Tyrone. Follow I-99 SOUTH to Exit 48 in Tyrone.
From points NORTH and EAST, Rt. 220/I-99 and I-80 provide quite good connections. (Upstate New York, New York City, New Jersey) Travelers coming from New York, New Jersey and New England should drive WEST on I 80. Exit at Exit 161 near Bellefonte and follow Rt. 220/I-99 SOUTH to Tyrone, Exit 48. Once off the highway, follow Rt. 453 SOUTH for approximately 2 1/4 miles until you see the sign for The Grier School. Turn left into the school driveway and climb the hill, following the directions indicated by signs for the admissions office. After you have gone around the front of the school, you will drive through a covered walkway which we call „The Colonnade.” Immediately after this point, turn and park the car with the front of the car facing the Ivy Court with its fountain in the middle.
Travelers from Philadelphia may follow the Pennsylvania Turnpike WEST to Exit 11 in Bedford. From there, follow I 99 NORTH to Tyrone Exit 48. Once off I-99, follow Rt. 453 SOUTH for approximately 2 1/2 miles to The Grier School.
