Located within the main college’s spacious grounds, the Junior boarding school is housed in a large Victorian building with plenty of room to accommodate its seven classes. The well-stocked Accelerated Reader library is constantly occupied as the children choose their next book in order to reach their next target. Junior School pupils also benefit from being able to share the Senior School’s outstanding facilities, including: ICT suite, the Sports Hall, Design and Technology Room, Art Studios, Science Labs, stunning cricket ground at Maxton with the most beautiful view of Dover Castle and acres of sports fields. Senior Learning Resource Centre is a modern area for independent learning using information technology or the more traditional book. It contains extensive guidance on careers and University applications. It is a focal point for study outside the classroom and has open areas for alternative lesson delivery. The school has an extensive state-of-the-art ICT wireless system that allows pupils to access information on their own devices. Intranet contains subject information from all our courses and information that goes beyond the confines of the specification. Laptops are extensively used as part of our lesson delivery. A recently built Lecture Theatre accommodates our extensive programme of talks for academic societies. In addition, the Sixth Form Boarding School has a programme of weekly lectures by outside speakers on a diverse range of topics.
There is comfortable boarding school accommodation within the Close of Dover College (both boys houses are undergoing refurbishment which will be completed by September 2015). A resident Housemaster or Housemistress, together with a Deputy, staff each House. Each pupil gets assigned a Tutor who is involved with the curriculum and academic life at Dover College.
The school day runs from 8.30am to 4.10pm, but a range of activities take place until 5.30pm as well as during the weekends.
Junior Boarding School:
The Dover College Junior Boarding School Curriculum priorities are to engage and enthuse children in the learning process. Topics and themes provide the opportunity to immerse the children in their learning in a cross-curricular approach whilst having clear educational purpose and true educational value.
This Junior Boarding school develops core skills, and focus most of the morning lessons on improving skills in reading, writing and numeracy. The staff follow the National Curriculum for English and Mathematics so as to ensure the vital building blocks are in place for future life skills, challenges and examinations. Languages begin in Year 1 with French and Spanish and run all the way through to Year 6. Children as young as 3 enjoy Music lessons twice weekly. In preparation for Senior School, Years 5 and 6 make use of the senior school facilities and expertise in additional subjects such as: Art, Design and Technology and Science.
Senior School: GCSE, A -level Boarding School in England
Pupils achieve exceptional GCSE and A-level results within a caring, cosmopolitan and diverse environment that encourages integration and mutual respect. Good results are achieved by our small class sizes, teachers who are well-qualified, able to differentiate, and provide extension work for Able, Gifted and Talented pupils and reinforcement work for those who need it. The academic programme is bespoke, individualised as much as possible at GCSE and the diverse and extensive post-16 curriculum includes both A-levels and BTECs.
Pupils in Years 7 to 9 follow a curriculum which incorporates the best features of the National Curriculum with added subject choice. Pupils are provided with opportunities for learning which will prepare them to cope with the rigour of GCSE study at the highest level. The curriculum reflects this, providing a wide range of both traditional and modern courses of study from which to make the final GCSE level choices. During the first three years in the Senior School, the emphasis is placed on sound preparation in academic skills and developing an enthusiasm for the subject. In Year 9, thorough advice on appropriate GCSE options is also provided which includes careers education. Pupils are placed in ability sets in subjects where this enhances achievement; these include Mathematics, English and Modern Foreign Languages.
Pupils study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. They will also study History, Geography, French, Spanish, PE, Information Technology, Art, Design Technology, Music, Drama, Business Studies, Economics, Religious Studies and a Modern Foreign Language, Textiles and English as an Additional Language is taught to International pupils requiring it. Latin and Mandarin have recently been introduced to Years 7 and 8.
Although there is an emphasis on traditional team sports such as football, hockey, rugby, netball and cricket, pupils frequently compete in other sports such as tennis, cross country, athletics, sailing, rounders, basketball, and swimming. Within the Senior Games programme, horse riding and yoga are also available
