Abbotsholme School: Rocester, Staffordshire, UK

School Gallery

Introduction

Abbotsholme School is a coeducational independent boarding school UK near the town of Rocester in Staffordshire, England. The school is situated on a 140-acre campus on the banks of the River Dove near the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border. An affordable top private boarding school in a beautiful rural setting.

Abbotsholme is a friendly, warm and unique boarding and day school for boys and girls from ages 2 to 18 (boarding from aged 10), set in the countryside in the centre of the UK, North of Birmingham, and on the Derbyshire / Staffordshire borders.

Abbotsholme School, which was set up in 1889, has often been described as one big family; with less than 300 people at Abbotsholme in the Prep and Senior Schools and around 15 in a class, the staff know every pupil, and pupils look after each other whatever age group they are in.

As a Round Square School, we are proud to say that we have a strong overseas community as part of the Abbotsholme family, which we believe really enhances the school environment. UK pupils can really learn about other cultures, customs and languages and get a sense of the multicultural world we live in; overseas pupils can get involved in English activities, learn English and enjoy a very real British Boarding school experience in top 10 boarding schools in England.

We have overseas pupils from a variety of countries including China, Germany, Dubai, Hong Kong, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the Baltic States, Canada, Africa and Japan.

Boarding at Abbotsholme is a way of life. With over 35% of our pupils being boarders, and 20% of the school roll coming from countries other than the UK, we have a vibrant and warm boarding community, in which pupils develop friendships that last a lifetime.

Our boarding houses provide small, comfortable and happy homes for all ages, each having their own character and personality. Younger pupils (ages 10-15) will usually share bedrooms in threes and fours whilst older pupils (ages 15-18) have single or shared study-bedrooms.

Our boarders learn independence, time-management skills and responsibility and, with guidance and support from houseparent’s, they learn how to balance academic work with social time.

Sixth Form pupils (age 16-18) now have some dedicated sixth form boarding school accommodation by way of a log cabin complex. Built in a peaceful setting within the school grounds, yet only a stone’s throw from the school’s central facilities, these self-contained, purpose-built cabins provide a wonderful opportunity for Abbotsholme’s sixth form students to experience a greater degree of independence and privacy.

Our belief is that this development will play a significant part in preparing our young people not only for university but, more significantly, for life itself.

Sport and culture

The Abbotsholme School sports programme offers rich and rewarding opportunities its pupils, complementing other areas of intellectual and creative endeavour to achieve a healthy mind and body. We are proud to offer extensive sporting options that accommodate all abilities and interests beyond the classroom.

At Abbotsholme School, we value sports as a means of developing self-awareness and confidence while teaching empathy and humility, recognising that each of us has different talents. Sports teaches respect and forces quick decision making – sometimes under pressure – and skills which can be applied to help overcome many of life’s subsequent social and intellectual challenges.

Sports Facilities

Abbotsholme School offers extensive grounds, sport fields and a synthetic pitch, providing year-round opportunities for training and matches. Just a stone’s throw away, the Peak District National Park opens the door for hiking, camping and endless outdoor adventures, enjoyed by generations of Abbotsholmians. Our campus is home to exceptional sporting facilities, making sports accessible to all pupils and encouraging them to participate in activities that will help discover and nurture their unique strengths.

Our young hockey players enjoy a training programme dedicated to enhancing their hockey skills, along with expert coaching and a series of competitive fixtures to test their abilities.

At Abbotsholme School, pupils can compete in hockey matches against other schools on Wednesday afternoons, while those not in a squad can play during games and enrichment multiple times a week. Our young hockey players train and compete on the school’s AstroTurf, as well as having access to our indoor sports hall, where hockey sessions are open to everyone.

Cricket, alongside hockey, is one of the core sports at Abbotsholme School. Our pupils benefit from a diverse training programme, expert coaching, and competitive fixtures scheduled throughout the school year.

Cricket has a longstanding tradition at Abbotsholme School, with recreational games played by the boys who first studied at Abbotsholme under Dr. Cecil Reddie’s education and leadership. Since its founding in 1889, Abbotsholme School has offered an environment where pupils’ talents are nurtured.

Our expert coaches inspire and support our young cricketers who aspire to play cricket professionally once graduating from Abbotsholme. Our excellent facilities which support our pupils in honing their talent and skills include 15 acres of sports fields, indoor and outdoor cricket nets, bowling machines, a dedicated cricket pitch, and pavilion – an area we as a school are particularly fond of and use frequently during the warmer month. As a school that is home to some of the region’s best players, this space is an integral part of our community.
