About the school

Step on campus and you can feel the pride—it comes from many many years of creating traditions. Traditions which have shaped young men into leaders here, in our great nation, and across the globe. Established in 1928 Valley Forge Military Academy has a long tradition of instilling values and building self-confidence to prepare tomorrow’s leaders. After surviving a first year fire, VFMA has continued to expand its educational and athletics programs and facilities for its students and faculty. The Academy offers college preparatory academics, credentialed faculty, competitive PIAA athletics, and individual attention, providing cadets with an environment focused on their academic success. Ninety five percent of Academy graduates enter college after high school. VFMA is dedicated to idea that it will provide education to students of “good moral character”

Campus Technology

Technology assists in educational process. A wireless network connects all classrooms, laboratories, library and dormitory rooms on campus. Cadet Net is the institutional local area network. This network provides access to the library and the Internet, and includes helpful campus information and technical support. All cadets are required to have a laptop computer. All of the classrooms are equipped with interactive projectors or Smartboard, Apple TV, and an instructional iPad. All courses are managed through PowerSchool, a web-based system accessible by students and parents.

General Housing Information

The majority of students live in companies, with the exception of those students who are members of the VFMAC Band. The companies live together, eat meals together in the Regimental Mess, and wear the unique uniform that identifies them as a Valley Forge Military Academy or Valley Forge Military College student.

Residence halls are known as Barracks, the military term for dormitory, in which students are normally housed in single or double rooms.

Residence halls are single-sex and range in size.

TAC Officers are the adults on the staff responsible for the overall supervision of a cadet’s daily activity. The TAC Officer is the primary point of contact for parents regarding a cadet’s overall performance. There is one TAC Officer (primary) and at night there is one Staff Duty Officer per barracks.

Academic life

Academy offers Advanced Placement, Honors and College Prep level coursework, and an intensive English Language Institute. Three distinct but connected groups comprise the middle school and high school academic programs: the Middle School (grades 6– 8); the High School Buff & Blue Experience (grades 9 and 10); and the Pre-College High School experience (grades 11 and 12).

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

The Middle School is a small corps of young men. Students in Middle School take core courses in Mathematics, Language Arts, Literature, Civics, Social Studies, General Sciences, Physical Education, and Character Education. Classes are divided separately between grades, but the Middle School interacts frequently as a group.

Buff & Blue (Grades 9 & 10)

The Buff & Blue Experience provides structure and independence for freshman and sophomore cadets. Teachers engage in team-teaching, class events, and interdisciplinary research projects in the ninth and tenth grades. Mathematics courses at all levels are available, and students generally take Literary Genres and American Literature, Ancient and Modern World History, Physical Science and Chemistry, and a variety of electives and World Languages.

Study Skills instruction is provided in 9th grade, and 10th graders concentrate on PSAT and SAT preparation. Parent communication is provided frequently, and additional support measures are put in place as needed. Buff & Blue cadets often gain tactical leadership responsibilities, are widely involved in campus activities, and gain increasing personal independence as appropriate.

Pre-College Grades (11&12)

In the Pre-College Experience, team-teaching dissolves due to the wide variety of Advanced Placement, elective, and college classes qualified cadets enroll in. Cadets who show proficiency in college courses greatly distinguish themselves in the college admission process.

Transitions between each of the academic programs are smooth. 8th graders progress easily from Middle School to the Buff & Blue Experience, and sophomores make a clean transition to pre-college preparation.

Sport and culture

Athletics available. Fall Football, Cross Country, Soccer, Horsemanship, Rugby Winter Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling Spring Track & Field, Baseball, Horsemanship, Golf, Tennis, Lacrosse

Valley Forge boasts impressive athletic resources, Price Athletic Center and the Athletic Fieldhouse, that combined house three full-size and six intermediate-size basketball courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fully equipped weight room, meeting rooms, and the L. Maitland Blank Hall of Fame. Also on campus are nine outdoor tennis courts, an all-weather track, indoor and outdoor riding arenas, stables, an indoor rifle range, and six athletic fields for baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer.

To supplement classroom learning, Middle School cadets take frequent field trips to off-campus learning sites, such as Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, the Brandywine River Museum, and cultural experiences at the opera and museums. Juniors and Seniors take upper level courses in all subjects, with advanced electives available in Art and Music.

English Language (ESL) Summer Program

The ESL Summer Program is for students entering grades 7-12 in the 2018-2019 academic school year.

The Valley Forge Military Academy & College ESL Summer Program is a four-week program designed for students who want to gain academic proficiency with the English language as well as the cultural competency necessary to succeed in the American classroom. The program includes language instruction, practical and theoretical leadership training, experiential learning trips, cultural immersion and exploration.
