John Lyon School in Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex is a UK boys boarding school. John Lyon School is worth considering if you are searching for a boarding placement near London!
JLS is unashamedly an academic school, dedicated to helping boys realise
their full potential and go on to secure places at leading universities.
Many opportunities exist to stretch particularly able students by
enabling them to study in greater depth and obtain additional
qualifications.
There is a strong academic core to the curriculum for the first five
years. Up to the end of Year 11, all boys are required to study not only
English and Mathematics, but also Science and at least one modern
language. ICT is taught to all boys in their first year and there are
opportunities to use technology in all subject areas and in all year
groups.
All boys take at least nine GCSE subjects. However, we do not believe
in increasing the total number of GCSEs much beyond this, preferring to
focus instead on the quality of the grades that can be achieved. In the Sixth Form, The John Lyon School stands out for its flexible
approach. Unlike many schools, we try not to let timetable clashes
prevent boys from following their preferred combination of subjects:
instead we simply ask pupils what they would like to study, and then we
do whatever is necessary to make it possible.
JLS offers an extensive range of traditional academic AS and A-Levels.
Some of our more recent additions to this range, such as Psychology,
Music Technology and Critical Thinking, have extended the creative
aspects of the Sixth Form curriculum.

In 1572, John Lyon, a local yeoman farmer, was granted a charter by Elizabeth I to found “the Free Grammar School of John Lyon”. By the 19th Century, helped by John Lyon’s generous endowments, “the Free Grammar School” had become Harrow School, one of the most famous and prestigious public schools in the UK. However, Harrow School had also moved away from its founder’s original intention of providing an education for local boys, with ‘foreigners’ (boys from outside the parish) hugely outnumbering the locals. To address this issue, the “Lower School of John Lyon” opened in 1876 as a day school for local boys. It was later renamed as The John Lyon School. Today The John Lyon School is part of the Foundation which also governs Harrow School and John Lyon’s Charity.
