About the school

Stowe School opened with its first 99 pupils, mainly aged 13, on 11 May 1923. There were two boarding Houses, Bruce and Temple, then both in the western part of the mansion. The following term Grenville and Chandos Houses were formed in the eastern wing, with Cobham and Grafton following soon afterwards as further parts of the house were converted into accommodation and classrooms. Chatham was the first purpose-built house, designed by the school’s first architect, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. He had been instrumental in developing a vision for saving Stowe as a new centre of learning to match its crucial role in national culture and politics of the 18th Century. He had personally bought Stowe Avenue in 1922 before old Etonians presented it as birthday gift to the new School in 1924.

Set in 750 acres of the most remarkable landscape gardens and parkland, and within one of the finest neo-classical palaces in Europe, Stoics enjoy surroundings of extraordinary historical and architectural significance. Unique to Stowe are the lessons in ‘Visual Education’ given to all boys and girls in the Third Form – these provide new Stoics with an understanding and appreciation of their environment.

Academic life

Pupils are encouraged to make the most of their academic abilities. Through discussion and guidance from their Tutors, they are set targets and given a clear understanding of our expectations. Progress is closely monitored and reported back to both Stoics and parents, through the reporting system and weekly one-to-one Tutor sessions. Academic work is monitored on a whole School basis at least twice per term through our programme of Academic Progress Grades (APGs).

The School aims to see every pupil achieve the very best that they are capable of: Stoics are regularly offered places at Oxbridge, and last year 87% of pupils gained places at their first choice university. Nearly 75% of our pupils achieved A/B grades at A2. This academic ethos is balanced by a huge variety of extra-curricular, sporting and artistic opportunities.

Sport is an important part of life at Stowe, whether representing the School, playing in an Inter House event or just for enjoyment with friends. Through the enjoyment of sport we enable Stoics to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as initiative, perseverance and leadership skills, while learning to understand the importance of team spirit and sportsmanship. Development of physical confidence helps establish self-esteem, so valuable in other areas of life.
