Boarding School in Yorkshire
St Peter's School in York, Yorkshire, England is a one of top co-educational boarding school for boys and girls in the UK. St Peter's School was founded in 627 AD, it is the fourth oldest School in the world. St Peter’s School York (13-18), with its two junior schools St Olave’s (8-13) and Clifton School (3-8), have a long history of delivering top class education. The curriculum has been devised to deliver a high quality all round education; it is continuously reviewed to ensure that it is relevant, innovative and challenging. During the third form pupils follow a broad curriculum which aims to give them a sound preparation for their GCSE courses and allow them to make an informed choice of their optional GCSE subjects. At GCSE all pupils study English, mathematics, science, a modern foreign language and religious studies together with three option subjects which are selected from ten possibilities. Physical Education and a course in Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) are also included, without examinations, in the fourth and fifth form curriculum. Pupils entering the Sixth Form are generally expected to study four subjects at AS level in the Lower Sixth and then continue with three of these subjects through to A-level in the Upper Sixth. In their Upper Sixth year, pupils will also study a non-examined ‘Global Perspectives’ course which complements their purely academic studies. At each stage when pupils are expected to make subject choices a comprehensive programme of advice for pupils and their parents is offered by the Careers Department, tutors and the Director of Studies, who maintains an overview of all academic matters. It’s in the Sixth Form Boarding School that our pupils really take full control of their learning. The range of subjects on offer and the special quality of the relationships between staff and pupils really makes the Sixth Form Boarding School the best. We want our pupils to develop enquiring minds and a love of learning, as well as making the most of the larger number of leadership and extra-curricular opportunities. Each Sixth Former has a House Tutor and Academic Tutor to guide them through the two years leading, for most, to university. Classes are small, and teachers are on hand to provide extra help and advice where needed, and in particular with applications to University. Each of our 230 Sixth Formers belongs to one of the 6 Day or 4 Boarding Houses where they can relax and socialise together. Each day house has a range of common rooms, studies, computer rooms and changing facilities. The House Masters and Mistresses, House Tutors and Boarding Parents are on hand at all times to offer support, help and advice. We encourage our Sixth Form Boarding School students to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Sports coaching, leadership within the CCF or Outdoor Pursuits programme, mentoring younger pupils, senior positions within their House, organising debates, showing visitors around the School there are many and varied opportunities that will stand them in good stead for applying for university and their chosen careers. There are many extra learning opportunities for our Sixth Form Boarding School students to enhance their UCAS application including: an additional module entitled ‘Global Perspectives’ which provides an opportunity to discuss topical issues in preparation for life in a global society; an excellent Lecture Series by leading visiting speakers; the opportunity of running a Young Enterprise company and access to the YASS scheme which enables pupils to experience modules of Open University under-graduate level study. Entering St Peter’s at Sixth Form Boarding School is a popular choice for those looking to move schools in the Sixth Form and each year we welcome new students into the L6. We have an induction day in June prior to the start in September to enable students to become familiar with their House Tutor and other pupils joining. They are also allocated a ‘buddy’ who will help them to settle in on their arrival. The Russell Group and Medicine applications One of the key reasons that new pupils join us in our Sixth Form Boarding School is for our excellent track record together with experience in successful applications to the Russell Group Universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) and courses such as Medicine, Vet Medicine and Dentistry. The school prides itself on making sure that non-academic requirements are also met including work and voluntary work experience. The Schools also has access to taster courses and presentation by professionals to ensure that pupils have a full insight into these particular career options.
