St George’s School for Girls: Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

School Gallery

St George's School for Girls in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK is one of top private independent schools in England. Great Scottish girls' boarding school with long tradition. Learning in a global context has been highly valued at St George's for many years. International education takes a variety of forms through which we seek to broaden students' cultural awareness, develop their linguistic proficiency and promote greater self-awareness and independence in order that St George's girls can take their place in the world as global citizens. The school has well-established exchange programmes with partner schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, Chile, South Africa, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. We welcome applicants for any year group where places are available in this all-through school. However, the school has to be satisfied that girls entering the school have the potential to benefit from the education that St George's offers. Although academically selective, the school will not discriminate against girls on the grounds of disability, race or religion. The school will make any necessary reasonable adjustment to accommodate girls who demonstrate the ability to benefit from education at St George's, and who have a disability. Parents are asked to bring any disability or learning difficulty to the attention of the school so that any reasonable adjustments may be made. The usual admissions process for the appropriate year group will apply, though we will not consider boarding applicants who are younger than the Primary 6 year group. For international students and for those who live some distance from the school, a Skype interview will be offered with the head of boarding, who is also a member of the academic staff and a deputy head of the school. A deposit of £1,500 is payable when a boarding place is accepted. Over 95% of pupils go on to Higher Education – including Russell Group and similar universities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Bristol, Durham and York.

About the school

St George's High School for Girls was founded in 1888 by a group of women who had themselves been denied access to the universities. They had already been campaigning for over twenty years for equal provision in education for women and girls.

The boarders have been at the heart of the St George's community for over 100 years. They number around 60, range in age from 11 to 18 and live in Houldsworth House, which is situated at the edge of the School grounds in the leafy suburb of Ravelston, only 20 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh
