St Bees School and the surrounding village boast a rich and varied history. The school itself is over 430 years old and was founded in 1583, by Edmund Grindal who was born in the village in about 1517 and went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury.
In the four hundred years since its establishment, St Bees has withstood changing fortunes, but it has continued to stand the test of time. After a brief closure we look forward to opening the doors of our magnificent school once more in September 2018, starting with a Year 7 intake which provides the best educational model for families. The school will grow organically from Year 7 upwards to establish the new culture from the ground up. Strong social dynamics and interactions are crucial to high quality education and group sizes remain small to ensure unrivalled care for the individual.
With top-class facilities, all situated in 150 acres of beautiful green space with clean air, this boarding school offers a wonderful and unique environment in which to study and play.
A full and integrated after-school activities programme provides a wide range of opportunities for all, to accommodate all talents, interests and abilities. This boarding school is fortunate to have its own nine-hole links golf course and short-game area, golf studio (with the latest computer analysis equipment), a swimming pool, fives courts, tennis courts, cricket nets, large sports hall, playing fields.
Sixth Form Pupils typically choose four subjects to study at AS Level in the Lower Sixth Form and three of these are usually continued into the Upper Sixth Form leading to three A Levels although we seek to tailor the curriculum to the needs of each individual pupil.
The following choice of subjects is available for study in the 6th Form to A Level:
Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, English, Literature, French, Further Mathematics, Geography, History, Information Technology, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education Physics, Spanish.
Pupils in the lower sixth all do games twice a week and will also study a non-examined programme consisting of Cookery for One, Presentation & Public Speaking and Personal Finance. The aim of this programme is to help equip pupils with additional skills and knowledge that will help both in the preparation for University life, but also entering the world of work.
Pupils in the Upper Sixth will also study an examined course in A Level General Studies. For pupils whose English is not their first language we provide tuition in preparation for IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The majority of St. Bees pupils leave to go to University (either directly or after taking a Gap Year) studying a wide range of subjects ranging from traditional courses such as Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Engineering, Geography, English and Law through to Languages, Management, and Sports based courses.
By road:
Turn off the M6 at Junction 40 on to the A66 to Keswick. Then take
the A595 to Whitehaven. St. Bees is clearly signposted off the A595,
three miles beyond Whitehaven and 47 miles from Junction 40. Our
advice is not to follow Sat Nav instructions as this will bring you a
convoluted route through the lake district and over a number of Fells.
By rail:
St. Bees has its own railway station on the Carlisle to Barrow line
operated by Northern Rail. Carlisle is on the main West Coast line run
by Virgin trains. Carlisle to London takes just over three hours while
Carlisle to St. Bees takes just over one hour.
By air:
International flights fly in and out of Manchester Airport (140 miles
from St. Bees). Newcastle Airport is only ninety miles away, but does
not at present support as many routes. The School provides transport to
and from these airports at the beginning and end of every term.
