Solebury opened its doors in rented quarters September 1925 with four boys and four teachers. A year later, the founders purchased its present location, the Michener Farm, and Solebury School as we know it has continued to grow ever since.
Just down the road from Solebury was Holmquist School for Girls, founded in 1917. Miss Karline Holmquist believed, as did Solebury’s founders, that each student should be helped to discover and develop her own talents and capabilities. As Solebury and Holmquist grew, the two schools found themselves sharing theatrical productions, a chorus, proms, informal teas, progressive dinners and card parties. In 1949 the two schools merged to become Solebury School, one of the first coeducational independent schools in the country.
While the faces have changed through the years, Solebury’s mission has remained, to provide a challenging college preparatory curriculum that encourages students to explore and develop their individual skills and talents in an informal educational community.
Solebury School’s location in Bucks County, PA enables us to visit many of the attractions of the northeast while enjoying the quiet, safety, and open space of a 90-acre rural campus.
Students dine on delicious cuisine in dining hall, study in the Library, and work out in our modern fitness center. A pool and tennis courts are available on-site for student use. High-speed internet access is available throughout campus.
.
Solebury has three dormitories. Each features a full kitchen, WiFi internet access, laundry facilities, and plenty of space for boarders to work and to enjoy their free time. For girls, the Holmquist House dormitory has 28 beds; Appledore, a smaller dormitory for senior girls has five beds. Walter Lamb Hall is a boys dormitory with 41 beds. More than half of the faculty live on campus. All of the teachers, but especially the dorm parents, are there for students at every turn – to offer extra help with that history paper, toss a baseball outside, spend an afternoon baking cookies, or drive a van of kids to the movies, local apple orchard, or even to New York City for the day.
Solebury School’s academic program features a college-preparatory curriculum, with courses and electives in various subject, with a focus on interdisciplinary and experiential education models.

With these facilities, Solebury hosts track and field events and offers a greater variety of athletic activitie
Solebury School offers a wide array of visual art classes. Each of these classes is taught by a professional artist. Students can take introductory classes which provide classical training in drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography, and then go on to pursue any of these disciplines at a higher level. For example, it is one of only 10 schools in the country that offers a Life Drawing class, an evening class for advanced students where they learn to draw live models. The most advanced students can take AP Studio Art where they can receive college credit while creating a portfolio to show to colleges.
Each year, Solebury students bring several productions to the stage for the community to enjoy. Theater curriculum includes classes such as Shakespearean Acting, Directing for the Stage and SoleStage Theater Tech. Students showcase their talents in a drama in the fall, a musical in the winter, and a Shakespeare production or student written and directed one-acts in the spring.
The theater tech program honors Solebury’s philosophy of getting students to pursue their passions. The tech crew transforms our wonderful black box theater, designing and building each set from scratch. Students are trained how to run the light and soundboards, construct the sets, and manage the stage.
Solebury School’s music program is current, innovative, and unique.
Approximately one-third of students are enrolled in the music program each trimester. Schols offers seven music performance classes: A Cappella, Chorus, Diversity Music Ensemble, Jazz Roots Ensemble, Master Singers, Rock Band, and Solebury Elite Ensemble. Each class has several performances throughout the year, and a number of students can audition to perform with the County Chorus or Ensembles. Non-performing classes are also offered, such as Scoring for Film and Video, American Song Roots, and Jazz Theory and Composition.
Solebury School has dance offerings during the academic day and as an after-school activity. During the day, students can take electives, such as Tap, Musical Theater Dance, Swing Dance, and Choreography, while after school they can join our dance group. Whichever of these students choose, they’ll have the chance to strut their stuff in performances for the community.
