Founded in 1525 by the Provost of Eton, the aims remain unchanged and parents still choose Sedbergh, as Wordsworth did for his sons, because it is challenging and has a sense of the free spirit in all aspects, but always in the context of unrivalled pastoral care. By 1528, land had been bought, a school built, probably on the site of the present School Library, and the foundation deed had been signed, binding the School to St John’s College, Cambridge and giving the College power over the appointment of Headmasters. This link to St John’s College probably saved Sedbergh in 1546-48 when most chantries were dissolved and their assets seized by Henry VIII’s Commission.

Established in 1525, Sedbergh School is one of only a very few full boarding schools in the UK. It is a traditional British boarding school that has maintained the best of British boarding school traditions whilst constantly introducing innovative ideas and new ways of teaching. International Summer School is an excellent example of this. Owned and operated by Sedbergh School’s own staff, it provides a complete British boarding school experience where students learn English from the finest teachers and, outside the classroom, enjoy an impressive range of sports, excursions and exciting activities. This exclusive course is designed for boys and girls aged 8-12 (Juniors) and 13-16 (Seniors). For English lessons, students are divided into Junior and Senior classes, which ensures that they receive the correct level of English tuition for their age and ability. In keeping with the ‘boarding school taster’ experience and the wish to develop independence, teamwork and leadership skills in students, all meals, lessons and activities are taken together. Sports, excursions and evening entertainment are also combined, allowing students to spend time with new friends. Students live in single-sex boarding houses under the care of an experienced Houseparent who acts in loco parentis and is responsible for the development and welfare of each student. All International Summer School staff are employed directly by Sedbergh School which helps students to settle quickly and to help them achieve their full potential during their stay.
Sedbergh International Summer School is well regarded for its superior level of pastoral care. Students live together in comfortable boarding houses; boys and girls in separate houses. Each House is looked after by an experienced Houseparent and Matron, which creates a happy and supportive “family style” environment. Students live in mixed nationality rooms, normally of 2-4 beds. Houses are well-equipped with social areas providing games room, wifi and Sky TV. Students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their families at home.
