About the school
Reed’s is a leading independent day and boarding school, providing an education for 800 pupils between 11 and 18, with girls in the Sixth Form. The charitable Foundation remains an integral part of our ethos today, instilling in our pupils – past and present – many important values including respect, integrity, kindness and compassion.
The Reed’s Foundation was established in 1813 by the Rev Dr Andrew Reed. With financial support from the City of London and other dignitaries, Rev Reed founded the London Orphan Asylum in Shoreditch. Its raison d’être was to care and provide an education for destitute children, boys and girls, who had lost both parents or their father, with the mother unable to provide for them.
Based in Clapton from 1825, in 1871 the school moved to Watford. Just prior to the start of World War II it was renamed Reed’s School and the boys were evacuated to Totnes in Devon – girls to Towcester in Northamptonshire. After the War in 1946, the girls moved to a separate school, Dogmersfield in Hampshire, and the boys took up residency at our current site in Cobham, Surrey.

Academic life
The Academic Curriculum at Reed’s provides as broad an education as possible before pupils choose their optional GCSE/IGCSE and A Level subjects. The curriculum in each year is designed to lead naturally into the next stage of a pupil’s education. Subjects are taught by specialist teachers at all levels. The Activities Curriculum is integral to the broad educational experience at Reed’s and there is an expectation that pupils joining the School will take every opportunity on offer through to the end of their Sixth Form years.
Sport and culture
The major sports of this Top British boarding school are rugby, hockey and cricket with academies in tennis, skiing and golf. The Senior School pupils (13+) play rugby, hockey and cricket in the Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms respectively. Pupils in The Close (the Junior School, for 11-13 year olds) play hockey, rugby and then cricket. This famous boarding school in England performs at the highest level in a number of other sports such as squash, athletics, cross country, basketball and swimming as well as offering access to more unusual sports though an extended activities programme; such as shooting, mountain biking, kung-fu and sailing.The ski team continues to be one of the best in the country, lead by skiing master Mark Vernon.
Reed’s had its Music School officially opened by Sir Cliff Richard. Its facilities include a recital room, state-of-the-art recording Studio, keyboard studio, percussion room and music library.
