About the school
The original school was founded by Dr Alfred Praetorius in 1881 in Weymouth Street, London. A few years later it moved to Folkestone and in 1921 to Kingsgate, Broadstairs, in the grounds of which stood an ancient arch, erected by Earl Holland to commemorate a chance landing by Charles II in 1683. This provided the name of the School: Port Regis, „Gate of the King”. In the 1930s, while at Broadstairs, the school was unusual in offering scholarships for the sons of physicians. In September 1943 Port Regis was evacuated to a wing of Bryanston School in Blandford. After a brief stay at the Earl of Verulam’s home at Gorhambury, the School moved in 1947 to Motcombe Park, one mile (1.6 km) from Shaftesbury in Dorset, where it has been ever since.
In 1972 the freehold of the property was acquired. More recent developments include the building of the Jowett sports hall, opened in 1980 by Anne, Princess Royal. The Centenary Hall was opened in 1984. On 22 February 1991, the Queen’s Hall, which houses a heated swimming pool and competition-standard gymnasium with sunken trampoline, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, while their grandchildren Peter and Zara Phillips were at the school.

Academic life
Our academic curriculum covers all the following subjects:
English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish), Classics (Latin and Greek)
Sport and culture
For boys the main team games are rugby, football, hockey and cricket. Girls are coached predominantly in hockey, netball, rounders and tennis as well as a little lacrosse. This best prep boarding school has its own astroturf pitch for all-weather play, a nine-hole golf course, a rifle range and extensive playing fields marked out freshly each week for matches against other schools in the region.
The school’s indoor sports complex, which comprises two sports halls opened by the Princess Royal and Her Majesty the Queen in 1980 and 1990 respectively, serves as a National Centre for Junior Gymnastics and facilitates expert coaching with the finest equipment for beginners and national team members alike. This preparatory boarding school also has two squash courts, a heated swimming pool, indoor cricket nets, and marked-out spaces for judo, karate, badminton, basketball, volleyball and fencing.
All children at this best boarding prep school UK get the chance to tread the boards at least once a year in our Centenary Hall which doubles up as a 350-seat theatre. Drama appears on the children’s timetables in Years 3, 4 and 5 (F, E and D Forms) and there is also an opportunity for Year 5 and above to study for LAMDA exams with visiting specialist drama tutors. The school has an enviable record of drama scholarships to senior schools, including all-rounder scholarships with drama as a key element.
