Introduction

Pangbourne College is a co-educational independent day and boarding school located in the civil parish of Pangbourne, in the English county of Berkshire. Set in 230 acres of Berkshire countryside, to the West of Reading, just minutes from the M4, the College provides a superb quality of life in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pangbourne offers a challenging all-round education, embracing academic rigour and a diversity of sport, music and extra-curricular activities, in a small school environment where every child can shine. Elements of Pangbourne’s naval heritage still exist today with students wearing Royal Naval uniforms and certain ceremonial traditions, which add colour to the Pangbourne experience, are maintained. Only two or three students leave the College with the intention of a career in the Armed Forces each year, and almost all go to university as their first destination. Students study a wide-ranging curriculum and Sixth Formers can choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate.

About the school

The college was founded by Sir Thomas Lane Devitt Bt. in 1917 as The Nautical College, Pangbourne with the purpose of training boys to become Merchant Navy officers. It became „Pangbourne College” in 1969 and while conforming to the general lines of a British independent boarding school, retains a distinctly nautical flavour; the pupils wear naval uniform. Girls were first admitted to the College in 1990 and Pangbourne has been fully co-educational since 1996.

Academic life

Our small class sizes allow pupils to receive individualised support; enabling them to achieve their full potential across a wide range of subjects. Whether a pupil is advanced in a subject and will benefit from our High Potential Achievers Programme or requires additional learning support, our experienced staff ensure that they progress effectively through their educational journey.

In Year 10, pupils start to study their GCSE courses. We offer a large number of possibilities for subject combinations to ensure that Pangbournians can choose subjects that best fit their abilities and aspirations.

Pupils continue to study Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, Science and then choose up to four option subjects. In addition to the examined subjects pupils also follow a Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education course The benefits of our small class sizes are most evident in the GCSE years, where they give staff the time to prepare pupils for their first experience of public exams.

Pangbournians learn most about themselves in the Sixth Form. A Levels require dedication and resilience, but are incredibly rewarding. Most pupils choose three Sixth Form subjects (A Levels or BTECs) along with an additional academic qualification such as an EPQ or Core Maths. Some will have mapped their career out, but many will use their Sixth Form years to figure out how their future will look with support from our Careers programme.

Our senior tutors support students through university admissions and we are proud that over 70% go on to study at their firm choice of university. In recent years, we have also helped pupils to apply for employment and specialist further education courses as well as apprenticeships.

Sport and culture

Hockey, Rowing, Rugby, Riding, Netball, Cricket, Tennis, Football, Sailing, Golf, Athletics, Swimming, Basketball

There are numerous opportunities for musicians of all abilities to pursue their interests outside of the classroom. As well as regular trips organised by the Music Department to see professional musicians perform, students are able to participate in the College Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Drum Corps, Percussion Ensemble and chamber ensembles.
