LA was founded in 1801 and is the fourth oldest secondary school in Maine.

LA has new science laboratories and updated classroom facilities.  There is also a beautiful new dining commons as well as a black box theater.  A new residence hall opened in the fall of 2013, and another new dormitory opened in February 2015.  The new Applied Technology and Engineering Center began hosting classes in March 2015.

ATEC is a fantastic new facility, well equipped with great resources. The building sits in a unique position between traditional skills like wood working and metal working on one hand, and modern skills like computer aided design and computer science on the other. Our programs aim to make best use of the resources here, as well as foster independence, creativity, innovation and community. We would like students to gain a sense of agency to know that they have the capacity to shape their own world, and to grow the inclination to do so. When programs take place with partnerships in the community, all participants learn a new level of collaboration, and can more deeply explore complex problems.

LA is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Maine Association of Independent Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Independent Schools Association of Northern New England, the College Board, The Association of Boarding Schools, the Secondary School Admission Test Board, and the Maine Principals’ Association.

Residential students are living in either a newly renovated dormitory on campus or comfortable houses within walking distance of campus.  Kiah Bailey Hall opened in February 2015.  A small number of students are living with host families.
