Introduction

An Independent British International co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 4-18.

Le Régent College is an IB World School situated on the Haut Plateau of Crans-Montana, a well-known mountain resort in Switzerland. The Junior School welcomes children from the age of four until thirteen. Pupils sit the 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance Exams.  It is expected that most of these children will move on to the Senior School where they prepare for IGCSE and IB Diploma.

The school produces well-educated global citizens. Added to a clear emphasis on the academic work, there are ample opportunities to develop talents in sports or in the world of arts. The school staff  develop the understanding and the practice of the four virtues underlying the school philosophy: Courtesy, Compassion, Creativity and Courage.

The community is a happy and purposeful one in which relation of trust and confidence among all members of our College is cultivated on a daily basis.

About the school

Facilities:

JUNIOR SCHOOL: Very comfortable facilities: 6 bedrooms of 4 girls and 8 bedrooms of 4 boys, each with an ensuite shower room. A couple of young teachers will live on the boys’ floor while the headmaster and his wife will share a floor with the girls. Teaching and learning will take place in seven bright spacious and state-of-the-art classrooms, one of which is a splendidly well-equipped science lab. To complement these comfortable learning spaces, the children will have the use of a well-endowed library. The whole of the top floor will accommodate all sorts of activities for the boarders with a playroom, a welcoming sitting room and a magnificent open space where films can be watched, board games can be played and general social interaction may take place. All our indoor sports activities will happen in a neighbouring sports hall.

SENIOR SCHOOL: Boarders will be housed in 72 bedrooms of two with ensuite shower facilities and looked after by their own floor tutors under the experienced guidance of dedicated houseparents.

The school comprises 26 classrooms of which 3 are science labs dedicated to biology, physics and chemistry. A luminous and capacious library is at the heart of the school’s learning and researching activities. It will also be the place where individual work will be encouraged by an atmosphere of calm and industriousness. A welcoming restaurant will offer mainly fresh local produce. The ground floor in each house is made of various sitting rooms, playrooms and a small kitchen for students. A large conference hall will be used for a variety of purposes.

In the Senior School there are two boarding Houses, one for the Senior girls and the other for the Senior boys; they are looked after by House Parents (Directors of Boarding) who are resident in the building. They are experienced in running efficient, caring, friendly and purposeful communities. Most of the time, they are also members of the teaching staff. Both buildings have three floors and each room accommodates two students. On each of these floors lives a young university graduate who cares for a maximum of 25 students.

In the Junior School, boy and girl boarders live on separate floors, looked after and provided for by living-in members of staff, including the Headmaster and his wife.  Small numbers and the special care given to the children’s welfare, together with a real family atmosphere, ensure a harmonious and happy life.  Each student shares a very comfortable room with en-suite shower and other facilities, with up to three of their peers.  They enjoy their own very well appointed Library which is a focal point to their learning; there is also ample and safe space for playing and enjoying each other’s company, both inside in the ‘Combles’ and outside with the playground equipment.  Indoor Sports Hall is situated a few meters away, ensuring boys and girls can exercise and enjoy fun in sport as often as possible.

Breakfast, morning and afternoon breaks are served in the building, but lunches and dinners are attended in the main dining room in the Senior School.  Great care is taken by the school chef and his/her team to prepare well-balanced meals with plenty of fresh and delicious food; special dietary requirements are also provided for.  Meals are taken in the traditional manner sitting together with members of staff, and good table manners are an integral part of the well-rounded education the school provides.

    Junior School

In Year 1 and 2 English, Mathematics, French Science, Humanities, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), Drama, Art, Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE), Phonics and Library are taught by the class teacher. Music, Physical Education and Sport are supported by specialist teachers.

The children in Years 3 and 4 are encouraged to develop their independent learning skills and build on the knowledge they have. English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, ICT, Drama, Art, PSHE, Phonics and Library are taught by the class teacher. French, Mandarin, Music, Physical Education and Sport are supported by specialist teachers.

In Years 1,2, 3 & 4 the creative curriculum is followed in Humanities, the creative arts, and ICT. The Curriculum is mapped creatively from the English National Curriculum. Where possible all teaching is linked to the Year Group topic and immerses children fully into their learning.

All children with a competent degree of English have a daily English lesson where they follow the English National Curriculum. ESL children follow the Cambridge YLE program until such time that they are able to join the mainstream English lessons.

In 5 &6 years English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Religious Studies, ICT, Drama, Art, PSHE and Library are taught by the class teacher. Those pupils learning English as a Second Language (ESL) are taught by an ESL teacher. Geography, History, Art and Technology are taught thematically as part of a topic based curriculum.

In Year 7&8 English, Mathematics, French, Mandarin, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Studies, ICT, Physical Education, Music, Drama, Art and Sport are taught by specialist teachers. The academic tutor who oversees the academic progress for each individual child teaches PSHE and Study Skills.

At the end of Year 8 pupils sit ISEB Common Entrance-style examination papers.

Senior School

YEAR 9 English, Mathematics, French, Mandarin, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Studies, ICT, Physical Education, Music, Drama, Art and Sport are taught by specialist teachers. The academic tutor who oversees the academic progress for each individual student teaches PSHE and Study Skills. During Year 9 the key priority is to lay excellent foundations for IGCSE and GCSE.

In Year 10 and 11 students work towards GCSEs and IGCSEs. GCSEs are the courses offered by all exam boards while IGCSEs (International GCSEs) are offered in a smaller number of subjects by some exam boards and are widely taught by leading schools. Academically more rigorous than their GCSE counterparts, these examinations require students to study, understand and think more deeply.

Each department chooses the best course in their subject: IGCSE in Maths, Science, English and English Literature, Geography, History and GCSE in all others. IGCSEs are examined through a mixture of written exams and (in a small number of subjects) coursework. All exams are taken at the end of Year 11 except Maths for Set 1, and a small number of language GCSEs for native speakers.

For pupils, grades matter more than the number of subjects, with the vast majority of Le Regent College students will sit papers at Higher Tier.

Most pupils take nine or ten GCSEs:

•             English (IGCSE in English Language and IGCSE in English Literature)

•             Mathematics

•             Sciences (all pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the subjects taught and examined separately. The final result is presented as two IGCSE grades known as Double Award Science). A triple Award could also be achieved.

•             A modern foreign language or English as an Additional Language.

•             History

•             Geography

•             One of the following two: Art and Drama

The following modern languages are also available: Mandarin, German, Spanish and Italian. Other foreign language such as Russian and Japanese could also be offered.  All of these languages will only be taught as a time-tabled class with a minimum of four students. Otherwise, the courses will have to be charged separately.

Le Régent College is proud to be an IB World School.

IB Diploma Programme

In Years 12 and 13, students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, which develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The IB Diploma is a holistic educational programme recognised by all major universities and employers throughout the world. It encourages students to develop skills and knowledge as learners, enabling them to be prepared for life and work in the 21st Century. It is a highly regarded post-16 educational programme that develops academic rigour.

The IB Diploma curriculum is made up of the Diploma Programme Core and six subject groups. Students choose three subjects at Standard Level (SL) and three subjects at Higher Level (HL), one from each subject group. Each subject (at HL and SL) is worth a maximum of 7 points, and the Core is worth a further 3 points, making a total of 45 points. To pass the Diploma, students must gain at least 24 points.

The six subject group categories are:

Group 1 – Studies in Language & Literature

Group 2 – Language Acquisition

Group 3 – Individuals & Societies

Group 4 – Sciences

Group 5 – Mathematics

Group 6 – The Arts

Sport and culture

Sport is an integral part of life at Le Régent College. During their time here, all students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of different sports, developing their individual skills, whilst learning the value of team work and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The Sport Programme, during the autumn and summer terms offers a wide range of sports including: football, basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, squash, badminton and fitness. In the winter term, all  students receive, as part of the school programme, ski lessons with ESS Montana’s qualified ski instructors. In addition, snowboarding and freestyle lessons are available. A special emphasis is placed on training most promising skiers in order to take part in ski competitions. The school is keen to promote opportunities to students in a range of sports, allowing the talented to excel. Students have the opportunity to participate in external private lessons in activities such as golf, tennis, karate, ballet, and horse riding.

Excellent facilities, including  sports hall, which houses two tennis and three squash courts. The school also has access to superb facilities in the local area for golf, horse riding and skiing and works closely with Golf Professionals at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club to deliver a comprehensive programme to pupils in years 9-10.

Music, Art and Drama are a key part of the academic curriculum and enrichment programme. Every student at Le Regent  is encourage to express themselves creatively and learn to work collaboratively.  This is not only enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding in itself, but also helps to develop essential communication skills and self-confidence.

MUSIC

A tremendous range of instruments is taught either by permanent or visiting peripatetic staff. With a versatile timetable individual music lessons do not clash with academic lessons. The students have the opportunity to be part of music ensembles, orchestra, choirs, and the opportunity to perform in informal and formal concerts, whatever their ability.

 ART

Art teachers are well-qualified and experienced specialists who teach a variety of disciplines including oil-painting, print-making, ceramics, textiles, photography, mixed-media work and sculpture. These activities are available to all students as either part of the academic curriculum or part of the Curriculum Enrichment programme. In the course of the year, the students have the opportunity to demonstrate their developing talent in school art exhibitions and competitions.

DANCE

From September 2016, Le Regent College students from both the senior and junior schools will enjoy their own custom-built dance and theatre complex where dance and drama will flourish. Over 100 square meters of sprung floors with multi-purpose dance surface equipped with mirrors and barres will soon be in use. It will indeed be a unique space where classical ballet will continue to thrive and other dance forms and exercise classes can now be developed.

DRAMA

Le Regent organises an exciting programme of productions involving all age groups throughout the year. The students also have the opportunity to participate in the House public speaking and reading competitions, which at an early age develop the key skill of clear, confident communication to a large audience.
