A great option if you are looking for a co-educational boarding school in the UK! Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk, England is a boarding school worth to consider! Co-ed school for boys and girls.
The Sixth Form Boarding School at Gresham’s is a vibrant academic community and students are encouraged to become increasingly independent as learners whilst developing their critical thinking skills. We currently offer two programmes of study in the Sixth Form: i) International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) ii) A-levels Regardless of which programme of study a student elects to pursue, the flexibility and breadth of Gresham’s Sixth Form curriculum ensures that we are able to cater for all interests and developing subject specialisms. Our subject prospectuses provide detailed information about both programmes and will help you to make an informed decision about the most appropriate pathway for you. Sixth Form Academic Prospectus From September 2013 all Sixth Formers will follow the IBDP Theory of Knowledge course. This course encourages students to think critically about subjects rather than passively accepting what they are taught. Critical thinking involves such things as asking probing questions, using language with care and precision, supporting ideas with evidence, arguing coherently and making sound judgements. The course is designed to help students reflect on and further develop the thinking skills which they must acquire in order to achieve optimum success in their chosen subjects. In the Sixth Form the emphasis is on discovery as opposed to teaching. Consequently much of the intellectual life of our collegiate community occurs beyond the confines of the classroom. The Colloquium offters students the chance to deliver academic papers in front of their papers whilst the debating society helps students refine their rhetorical skills. Most academic departments run busy societies that provide many opportunities for students to broaden their horizons and reach a deeper understanding of the subjects that they are studying. Academic societies such as the Auden (English) and Hodgkins (Science) are often addressed by eminent academics, authors, journalists and poets. The busy schedule of museum visits, theatre trips and overseas projects all contribute to a lively, progressive and outward looking Sixth Form. We maintain close links with the University of East Anglia and students routinely attend lectures on campus.
IB. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is integral to the new Sixth Form at Gresham’s – all students entering our Sixth Form from September 2015 will enjoy the benefits of this broad, rigorous and flexible curriculum. The IBDP was introduced to Gresham’s in 2007, and has proved increasingly popular with our students, who have achieved outstanding results. Gresham’s has swiftly gained an international reputation as an IBDP centre of excellence, progressing to some of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, including Oxford, Yale, UCL, Imperial College, Edinburgh, Warwick, Connecticut, Berkeley and LMU Munich. We believe that the IBDP’s reputation for proven academic depth across a broad and innovative curriculum makes it the optimum academic programme for all Gresham’s students and the best way of providing them with the intellectual, social, cultural and linguistic skills they need to succeed. In particular, as an academic qualification, the IBDP engenders a sense of internationalism and an awareness of global contexts – something that is increasingly valued by university admissions offices and employers in today’s global marketplace. The IBDP also offers more to a wider range of pupils, with the Diploma, Bi-lingual Diploma and the Diploma Programme Course Results (awarded to pupils who do not take the full DP or achieve partial success in it) all being independently accredited to all further and higher education institutions in the UK. The decision to fully embrace the IBDP has not been taken lightly. Whilst A-levels were once considered the educational ‘gold standard’, their continued appropriateness and the value placed upon them have been subject to much public debate. Whatever happens in the following years with regard to any reform of A-levels, one certainty is that the IBDP offers a stable, credible and internationally recognised path to academic success in an increasingly competitive and changeable environment.
