Independent Boarding School UK
Bredon School is an independent mainstream day and residential school for boys and girls of all abilities from 7 to 18 years old. The school has a specialism for helping children with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and associated Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) and Social and Communication Needs achieve their potential. Bredon School could be considered as a boarding special school and is CReSTeD accredited and hold designated DU (Dyslexia Unit) status. This is also boarding school for international students and welcomes learners from the local area, the wider UK and from overseas. Class sizes (average between 6-12) are small with high staff to student ratios.
All pupils benefit from multi-sensory teaching, including access to a School Farm where students learn basic animal care and help to feed the livestock and maintain the estate. Younger pupils have the opportunity to learn outdoors also, on the School Farm and in the dedicated woodland classroom, learning basic bush craft skills and understanding more about nature and habitats.
A wide-ranging curriculum includes practical vocational courses such as BTECs in catering & hospitality and engineering, as well as GCSE and A Level choices. Bredon also benefits from having its own onsite CISCO academy which teaches programming and networking skills suited to those looking for technical ICT careers in the future.
This boarding school alongside the traditional academic subjects offers strong focus on practical and hands-on learning. An array of extra curricular activities, including drama, the arts and music, cookery, outdoor education trips, a Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, clay and air rifle shooting, climbing, canoeing and traditional team sports, means every student finds an area in which to shine.
Like at special boarding schools support services are provided: Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy.
The school prepares its students for success at the next stage, whether that is college, university or employment. The school’s alumni include several notable successes, including an English National Hunt Jockey, an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden designer and a UK-based restaurateur.
As a top UK Boarding school offers a full boarding arrangement, which includes weekends, flexi boarding or day boarding, which enables day students to stay at school until 7pm to complete their prep/join an activity and have supper.
Children are welcome to board at Bredon from the age of 9 years old.
Based in enviable surroundings in rural Gloucestershire, Bredon’s facilities include an ’84 acre outdoor classroom’, incorporating a working school farm, a forest school, a climbing tower, a clay shooting ground and numerous sports pitches, all used to help build confidence and self-esteem.

“While qualifications represent an important destination, the educational process by which that destination is reached is equally, if not more, important.” Lt Col Sharp
Bredon School opened in September 1962 with 17 pupils, with its main focus on providing a public school education for boys who had failed the Common Entrance Examination. It was established by Lt-Col Tony Sharp and Hugh Jarrett.
From the beginning, developing self-discipline and self-confidence was part of the Bredon package. Leadership and teamwork skills were reinforced through expeditions based around a tumbledown cottage owned by the Sharps in the Brecon Beacons.
Col Sharp’s approach was ahead of its time in many ways. One achievement of which he was particularly proud was that it was the first independent school to be officially recognised by the then Department of Education as offering special provision for dyslexic children.
In 1982 the School extended its admissions to boys aged 11 and in 1989 it extended admissions further to seven-year-olds, whilst becoming co-educational boarding school at the same time. In September 2011 the School established a Reception and Years 1/2 class.
The School became part of the Cavendish Education group in December 2014, which has a number of other specialist day and boarding schools in the UK.
Boarding school accommodation is provided in both historic Pull Court and in specially-designed boarding houses.
All boarding areas are well staffed and equipped with a games room, reading room, TV and video lounge, a kitchen and a tuck shop. Pupils are encouraged to display personal items, such as photographs and posters. Senior boarding school pupils are allocated their own individual work stations.
Specialist facilities: school farm, forest school, CISCO Academy, sports fields.
Bredon is independent coeducational boarding school from Key Stage 2, through to Sixth Form.
Staff of Bredon School fully understand that the way in which each child develops in those subjects is different. Some may learn best in a classroom setting, others will learn through exploration; still others will gain tremendously from the performing arts or from their growing sporting prowess.
The school provides a full curriculum of both academic and vocational subjects at GCSE and Advanced level including:

Maths
Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

Spanish
