Bishop’s Stortford College is one of the leading independent co-educational boarding schools in the UK. Large enough to provide an exceptional range of opportunities, yet small enough for individuals to be known and valued. The College is blessed with a beautifully peaceful, spacious and safe setting, close to the countryside yet within walking distance of the market town centre. Easily accessible by air, road or rail, full advantage is taken of our close proximity to London and Cambridge. Small classes and our focus on the individual mean that every pupil receives the time and attention to develop the confidence and desire to learn. Every pupil is encouraged, taught and challenged to achieve his or her best across a broad curriculum. Recent achievements at A-level have ranked Bishop’s Stortford College as a top 10 co-educational boarding school and amongst the 100 independent schools in the UK.

The facilities and resources for learning and living are superb. An innovative Science Action Centre (perhaps the only one of its kind based in a UK school), pioneering use of Geographical Information System technology, numerous and high quality musical concerts and drama productions and extensive sports facilities are just a few examples. The Ferguson Building is one of the many complex building projects undertaken in recent years in order to improve the facilities available to the staff, students and the wider community of Bishop’s Stortford. The Ferguson Building houses a large lecture theatre, one of the Senior School ICT labs and the Sixth Form Social Centre. The Ferguson Lecture Theatre is available for use by local community groups. Bishop’s Stortford College was one of the first schools in the country to install a wireless infrastructure. ICT Resources Overview:
• A stable, reliable College-wide network with broadband internet connection, supporting 420 computers and with appropriate e-safety systems applied.
• Seven IT labs: four in the Senior School, two in the Prep School and one in the Pre-Prep.
• Additional smaller suites of PCs are located across the campus in areas such as the libraries.
• The majority of classrooms have interactive whiteboards or projectors.
• A wireless network supporting mobile devices: all Senior School pupils who choose to work with laptops or other mobile devices have access to a wireless infrastructure which extends into the Houses. The wireless network maximises the functionality of personal devices by providing internet access (including access to College portals) and printing resources.
Belonging to one of College Houses is a major part of life for all Senior School pupils and Prep School boarders. Each House has an incredibly strong sense of community, with an emphasis on co-operation, responsibility, independence and mutual respect. The diversity of backgrounds and nationalities expands horizons and enriches all those within the College community. In 2017 the school opened one brand new boarding house for girls, a new replacement boarding house for boys, one new boys’ day house (to replace an older building) and in early 2018 they opened a fully refurbished boys’ boarding house.
Whilst academic study is our priority, we believe passionately in the value of an all-round education, and to this end, life at Bishop’s Stortford College is packed with opportunities outside the classroom. The diversity of choice is exceptional. Our dynamic and innovative centres for music, art and drama are highly regarded, and we enjoy a successful record in sport at both regional and national levels.
Three schools in one
Our Pre-Prep and Prep School offer day schooling for pupils from 4 years of age, and day and boarding for those between 7 and 13 years. Each has its own distinctive learning environments, whilst being part of the wider school community, sharing the same campus and ethos. They also benefit from a greater range of facilities, teaching resources and opportunities than is typical of most schools for these age groups. Pupils are well prepared for entry into Senior School at 13+, ensuring a smooth transition.
Core Sports
Boys: rugby, hockey, cricket, swimming and tennis
Girls: hockey, netball, rounders, swimming and tennis
Bishop’s Stortford College has outstanding sports facilities to support a wide range of sports and games, including:
• Extensive and well-maintained playing fields
• A well-equipped sports hall and state of the art fitness centre
• Indoor swimming pool, which includes a large spectator gallery and learner pool
• All-weather surface courts for netball and tennis
• Two floodlit astro pitches for hockey and tennis
• A floodlit netball court
The Senior School Art Department is located in a stunningly spacious Art Centre and it plays a central part in the life of the College. Opened in 2009, the purpose built Art Centre has many large studios, including a sculpture studio, a workshop, a gallery space, an IT suite, a dedicated Sixth Form studio and a well resourced departmental library. This allows pupils to become involved in painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, glass, graphic design, photography, fashion, animation, computer generated imagery and film making.
With a large staff, excellent facilities and equipment, an enthusiastic atmosphere and numerous opportunities to take part in making music, a large proportion of Senior School pupils are involved in some kind of musical activity and there are many opportunities for individuals and groups to practise and perform. Many pupils are involved in as many as four or five different groups.
