From September 2024, Aysgarth became fully co-educational for the first time in it’s 150 year history, welcoming 34 girls to join the 118 boys in the prep school. Headmaster Jonathon Anderson says: “This decision is about making our best even better. Aysgarth has a longstanding tradition of preparing boys for success at leading senior schools and beyond. With this expansion, we aim to provide the same exemplary educational experience for girls, ensuring they receive the finest opportunities, ambitious teaching, and celebrated pastoral care.” Aysgarth is very much a boarding school and our pupils travel from throughout the country and across the world to join the Aysgarth community. The School is very much a home with all boarders living in the main building and strong pastoral care is at the heart of a healthy and happy community. Aysgarth is one of the leading independent Prep Schools for boys and girls aged 3-13, where we aim to find the best in every child. Our ethos and values develop every child in every respect- to be happy, confident, courteous, independent and ambitious.

Between 2002 and 2015, under the leadership of Headmaster Anthony Goddard with his wife Caroline, the School saw a lot of improvements in decor and new buildings including an extension to the dining hall, more homely dormitories, new classrooms, superb new Sports Hall and a re-developed performing arts centre. Mr Goddard, along with a new Committee of Trustees launched the Aysgarth School Foundation in 2008.
The Foundation was set up to raise funds for bursaries, enabling families, regardless of circumstances to give their child an Aysgarth education and to offer all pupils the distinctive Aysgarth life. The Foundation plays a vital role in securing the School’s future through funding development projects.
In 2019 a fantastic art and Design and Technology Block was opened enabling our pupils to experience a very high-level and broad Art and Design Technology programme
The School has benefited from the philanthropy of previous generations throughout its history. In the past, it has been able to fund investments in the School of over £1.5 million through prudent management. However, the step change projects needed to keep it at the forefront of prep school education whilst widening access to this excellence necessitates an appeal to the generosity of the current generation.
In Year 7 and 8, pupils of higher academic ability follow a ‘scholarship’ curriculum in all academic subjects. Although the content is tailored towards the particular requirements of each individual and the senior school scholarship journey, these tests – both written and interview – have much in common with each other, all demanding:
In order to achieve the above students develop a love of learning from an early age and are encouraged to hone their own study skills to become the most efficient learners. Knowledge of self provides the basis for critical thinking as well as taking a meta-cognitive approach to their own learning.
By virtue of small classes (average 12 children in a class) and the relatively small number of academic scholars, they benefit from an individually tailored programme to nurture their natural ability and scholarship exam preparation. Each subject teacher has a scholarship curriculum. For more information on how we support academically strong children in the individual subjects of Maths, English, Sciences, French, Latin, History, Geography, Religion, Ethics and Wellbeing, DT, Art and Drama (and LAMDA) please contact us.
What makes the Academic development of our pupils really stand apart is the enrichment activities we offer.
These include:
Moral Maze – Students grapple with questions such as: ‘is it possible to place worth or value on a human being?’ ‘Is it moral to be wealthy?’, ‘Is justice a human construct or is it independent of humans?’ These sessions are normally discussed over a cup of hot chocolate and make your brain go ouch! – but in a good way.
English Club – Fancy an evening reading a poem together in a small group? There is plenty to discuss – meaning, theme, character and action as well as appreciating the writers’ purpose and the effects that language, structure and form have on meaning.
French Club – An opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of not only key grammar structures but also francophone culture, history and current affairs.
Scholars’ Discussion Group – Students can choose interesting questions on a whole range of topics to ‘engage civilly in discussion and argument’; grappling with questions on human nature, ethics and morality, the universe, reality, political science, technology, and cultural and current affairs. This is a chance to present and reflect on academic interests outside the classroom.
At Aysgarth, we believe that one of our strengths is the acknowledgement that the pupils in our care all have their own unique set of gifts and talents. We believe that a classroom built around trust and encouragement, with positive relationships between staff and pupil is foremost in allowing our pupils to thrive and reach their full potential.
We have a long and successful tradition in providing high quality education based on a strong set of values that are actively promoted. Our curriculum is one means by which we support our pupils in developing their own understanding of our values in order to grow into adults able to lead fulfilling and positive lives.
In teaching our curriculum we aim to
The academic subjects taught are: English, maths, science, French, Latin, history and geography. In preparation for the 13+ examination, the syllabus for each subject is written by the Head of Department, in consultation with other teachers within the department, and based upon the ISEB Common Entrance syllabus.
Sports Ethos – ‘“Sport for all with opportunities for excellence”
At Aysgarth, we give every child the opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting activities, and to represent the School in all major sports. Our PE curriculum and Games programme work hand in hand to ensure that each child finds a passion for sport and reaches their true potential. The ultimate aim is, of course, to instil a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.
Whilst traditional prep school sports such as rugby, football, hockey cricket, hockey, netball and cross-country are strengths. The games programme, however, also offers a multitude of sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, climbing, shooting, swimming, tennis and triathlon. We provide a full fixture list to allow all pupils the opportunity to represent the school and learn the vital skills of teamwork, resilience, respect, endeavour and courage that provide the strong foundations for all aspects of their future.
The passion for sport often results in our children achieving sport at the highest level. As a school, we attend a variety of regional and national competitions each year including the IAPS and English Schools championships, most recently in Cross Country, Hockey, Swimming, Athletics and Triathlon. Our fixture list is extensive as we aim to challenge the children at every level. Pupils have gone on to receive representative honours in their chosen sports and many have achieved scholarships at their future Senior Schools; Harrow, Sedbergh, Rugby, Uppingham, Fettes, Shrewsbury, Ampleforth, Merchiston Castle and Barnard Castle to name a few over previous years.
