Introduction

Catholic Benedictine 11-18 co-educational boarding & day school for boys and girls.

We are presenting Worth School in Worth, West Sussex, England. Good location not far from London. Worth is a Roman Catholic school under the guidance and care of the Benedictine monks of Worth Abbey who work closely with the Head Master and lay staff with the single vision of offering a complete education for young people, mind, body and spirit. Our work is shaped by the gospel of Christ and the wisdom of St Benedict. We aim to share with parents in the formation of their children, in a Christian community that is joined in mutual respect, friendship and prayer.

We strive for excellence in all things and promote the realisation that high levels of success and achievement, in all avenues of life, are not simply ends in themselves nor the means to achieve personal gratification alone. They are also the means to serve the needs of others and to lead a good Christian life.

Worth School is located in the South East of England and is set alongside Worth Abbey in 500 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside.

Extra Curriculum

As the title implies, there is a diverse and wide-ranging programme of events and activities for pupils outside the curriculum. There are three main areas:

  • A comprehensive activities programme for Years 9 to 11. Because of the nature of some of the activities, sixth formers will often opt into a particular activity.
  • A voluntary Community Service Programme open to all Year 9 to 13 pupils. These activities take place both on and off-site.
  • A weekend social programme primarily for boarders but also open to day students. This comprises not only outings and activities for boarders on Sundays, but also a full social programme for all Year groups throughout the year.
Students undertaking a Duke of Edinburgh Award or the International Baccalaureate may utilise (a) and/or (b) in order to fulfil their requirements. Years 7 and 8 have their own activity carousel and a full programme of weekend outings. There is an on-going review of each area in order to cater for any changes within the school and also to retain and sustain the interest of the students. In addition to the above, in the evenings there is a programme of sports activities.
  • Some of these are recreational - badminton and soccer.
  • Some are private coaching - tennis and squash.
  • Some are clubs - badminton, basketball, karate.

Middle School

Middle School: Years 9 to 11

Year 9

The curriculum in Year 9 follows a similar pattern to that of Years 7 and 8, with some additions and modifications: Art, Design, Drama, English,  French, Geography, History, ICT, Mathematics, Physical Education and Religious Studies are studied in preparation for GCSE and IGCSE courses.  The Sciences are studied separately so students have lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Spanish or German can replace French or be studied as an optional second language. Latin and Music also remain as options.

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 and 11 students undertake the two-year GCSE or IGCSE course in a variety of subjects, usually 10 or 10½ in number.

The core syllabus includes English usually with English Literature (IGCSE), French, German or Spanish (IGCSE), ICT (OCR Nationals), Mathematics (IGCSE), Religious Studies (GCSE) and the Sciences, which can be studied separately or in the Double Award Science course which represents two IGCSEs. The available GCSE options comprise Art, Drama, Economics and Business Studies, History, Latin, Music and Physical Education. German, Spanish and Geography are also offered as options and follow the IGCSE course.  IGCSE ESL is also available for a small minority of EAL students.

The Extended Project Qualification (OCR H856)

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) was introduced in September 2009.  It offers Sixth Form students the opportunity to research a topic in depth and produce a 5000 word dissertation on a subject of their choice. It is a free-standing AS qualification and its purpose is to add a further dimension to sixth-form study, preparing students for the kind of independent learning that they will encounter at university.  Click for further information on the EPQ.
