Some history: Founded in 1811, Thornton Academy is one of the nation’s oldest independent schools. Originally named Saco Academy, the name was soon changed to Thornton Academy by the Board of Trustees in honor of Thomas Thornton, one of the Academy’s earliest and most generous benefactors. 
Campus size and facilities: Located in sunny, Saco, Maine, Thornton Academy's campus is large, beautiful, and welcoming to students, staff, alumni, and community members. 
Campus facilities include eight buildings: a library, a science building, two humanities buildings, a foreign language building, an art center, an observatory, and a 500-person
theater. Sports facilities include sports fields, tracks, basketball court, and four multi-purpose stadiums.

About the school

Dorm Facilities: Thornton Academy has two dormitories that have Wi-Fi, kitchenettes, laundry facilities, modern bathrooms, and lounges with big screen TVs. Rooms include a bed, desk, wardrobe,
dresser, bookshelf, and chair for each student. Students have their own outdoor basketball court and several outdoor barbeque dinners throughout the year.

What we offer? Thornton Academy offers more than 200 courses in a variety of subjects, including 24 advanced placement (AP) classes, 42 honors level classes, seven foreign languages, and award-winning performing and visual arts programming. Our new state-of-the-art STEM Center (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) includes four biology and chemistry laboratories, and one engineering lab. Our New Media Center features the TATV television studio, and hosts our classes in computer programming, multimedia production, journalism, and video game programming.  Outside of the classroom, Thornton Academy offers 57 sports teams and 46 after-school clubs and activities, creating plenty of opportunity for students to pursue their passions and discover new talents.
