Some history: The International School at Sotogrande (ISS) was founded in 1978 by a group of residents of Sotogrande who wanted to offer to the local and growing international community, a British-style education with a Spanish influence. By 1990 the school had developed into a successful and popular primary school with over 250 students and included a high quality secondary school offering UK O-level and A-level courses. For twenty years the school grew steadily and established itself as a leading British-style school in Spain. In 2001, under a new education foundation lead by Paul Templeton, the school relocated to a purpose built campus with the new name Sotogrande International School (SIS) with a roll of 500. SIS is now a leading international school in the region offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes and IB Diploma examinations. Our student body is culturally diverse with approximately one third British and one third Spanish and the remainder consisting of more than 35 other nationalities.

About the school

Long description: Sotogrande International School is a passionate learning community which inspires learning by focusing on the individual and creates an environment where children can flourish. Our students achieve because they are happy and our fantastic results shows that our philosophy really works. Our philosophy is to use child-focused, holistic learning to inspire, challenge and empower students to become the best they can be. SIS students are confident successful learners, happy, well-rounded and motivated individuals, able to cope with change and prepared for the world of work. We help them to find and follow their passions to the highest possible level, as we believe students achieve their best when they are happy. We teach them to be Global Citizens and leaders, understanding the importance of giving back to others and the potential to use education as a force for good and have created real life opportunities for students to make a difference in the world through our school NGO, the Kindred Project. We have brought together a team of highly qualified, experienced, dynamic and dedicated teachers and support staff to inspire and educate our students in a broad range of subjects. We follow the International Baccalaureate programme from 3-18 years old, as we believe it offers an outstanding educational structure and global philosophy which matches the school’s, a broad base of subjects and a qualification which is recognised by universities and employers around the world. As a result of our commitment and dedication to providing the best possible learning environment for each individual need, we are achieving superb academic results, with an average of 35 points at Diploma. The International Baccalaureate in Spain The International Baccalaureate programmes offer a seamless path through a student’s education, from age 3 to 18. This qualification is recognised around the world and focuses on international perspectives of learning and teaching. It aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. In addition to being a rigorous academic curriculum with a broad breadth of study, it also places importance on creativity and contributing to the community which offers more opportunities for the children to develop and find themselves and their passions. A child’s introduction to the IB is through the Primary Years Programme, whose philosophy and mode of delivery reflect our aims to inspire students, develop intercultural understanding and for learning to be based on integrated cross-curricular units of inquiry. Once students reach secondary school age, they embark on the Middle Years Programme, which is guided by three fundamental concepts: Holistic Learning, Intercultural Awareness and Communication. There are five areas of interaction (Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Human Ingenuity, Environments, and Health and Social Education). These areas of interaction help connect the subjects studied with the real world. The aim is to help young people to become inquiring, knowledgeable and caring: to learn how to learn and to evaluate information critically. The MYP is an excellent preparation for the 2 year Diploma Programme which follows. The IB Diploma in turn is a highly academic course of study that prepares students well for university and the world beyond. The qualification offers both breadth and depth of study and challenges students to be confident, independent learners. Students are required to study three subjects at higher level, three subjects at standard level, which must include a language, maths and a science. In addition they study the Theory of Knowledge, follow a Creativity, Action and Service programme and produce an extended essay. This is a demanding, but rewarding course which is highly valued by universities and employers.

This means our boarding programme encourages students to engage all aspects of themselves; the intellectual, the physical, the creative and the spiritual. We all learn best when we stimulate all of the senses together, and engage both our mental and physical selves. There is a growing programme of exciting activities and sports which include both day and boarding students, further prospering the interconnectivity of all our students. Some of the activities already on offer: ● kite surfing and other water sports in Tarifa ● horse riding ● golf ● tennis ● fitness training centre ● music studio and practice room ● football ● music, drama and art ● charity projects in collaboration with the school’s NGO, The Kindred Project
Culture and arts: The expressive arts are a most impressive feature of the programme we offer. Through the arts, students learn how to express themselves in diverse ways, have the opportunity to develop their own ideas and gain confidence in being able to express those ideas. We give students many opportunities to demonstrate their expressive arts skills through dramatic performances, concerts, exhibitions, assemblies, and presentations. These important skills are an invaluable preparation for their future educational and career success. The school is registered as an exam centre for drama examinations offered by the London Academy for Music and Drama (LAMDA). These take place in the school each November and June. Individual music tuition is an important part of the extra-curricular programme. Many students take instrumental and vocal music lessons. The instruments offered at present are flute, guitar, bass guitar, piano, drums, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone and voice, as well as Studio Recording, Music Production, Songwriting and Music Marketing & Promotion. The school is registered as an examination centre for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity Rock School examinations, and these take place in the school each November and June. Each term there is an instrumental concert when students perform music they have been taught in their lessons.
