Introduction

Shrewsbury school plays and musicals have drawn praise at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London, and as one would expect from one of the strongest music departments in the country, the breadth and quality of music-making is remarkable, culminating for  orchestral players with annual concert, either in London or Birmingham.

Shrewsbury School in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England is a co-educational independent private boarding school for boys and girls aged 13 to 18, founded by Royal Charter in 1552. The school provides an outstanding range of subjects in the curriculum and an extraordinary range of activities in the extra-curricular programme, in accordance with its aims. The academic curriculum is broad and balanced, and is suited to all levels of ability.

The celebration of individuals and individual talent is central to education at Shrewsbury – both in and beyond the classroom. In whatever sphere, a pupil will find a member of staff to support and encourage, enthuse and inspire him or her to exceed their expectations and meet the challenges that lie ahead with confidence and good judgement. This is as true for pupils from England or overseas, whose diversity of experience we both welcome and value.

Shrewsbury has a well-earned reputation for academic, musical and sporting excellence, the Independent Schools Inspection Report commented that Shrewsbury offered, ‘outstanding education…outstanding pastoral care'

Shrewsbury is a school of about 745 pupils.

About the school

Dorm Facilities:

Life at Shrewsbury is founded on a close partnership between staff, parents and pupils to promote the strength of family life, foster responsibility, and balance the claims of developing individuality with the needs of a vibrant community. To make this ideal a living and working reality, the School cares for its pupils in 13 Houses – currently two day boy houses, seven boys boarding houses and three girls houses for both day and boarders. A fourth girls houses will be converted by 2018. The Housemaster or Housemistress, supported by an assistant, a matron and a team of tutors, is therefore a crucial figure, giving sound advice when necessary and encouraging pupils to a rich and varied life at Shrewsbury. He or she will also be very keen to keep in touch with the families of all his or her pupils, but especially those who live a long way away.

Facilities and coaching for these and a host of other sports including badminton, basketball, tennis, fencing, lacrosse, hockey, netball and swimming are excellent.

Culture and arts:

Shrewsbury school plays and musicals have drawn praise at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London, and as one would expect from one of the strongest music departments in the country, the breadth and quality of music-making is remarkable, culminating for  orchestral players with annual concert, either in London or Birmingham.

Why Should You Choose this School?

One of the most scholarly schools in the country, our aim in the classroom is to inspire and enthuse pupils from across the top of the ability range. In recent years, on average, 12% of leaving pupils have gone on to Oxford and Cambridge and virtually all to the university of their first choice; we expect about 84% of A Levels each year to be passed at A*, A or B grade. But there is as much joy for the less academic pupil who surpasses his expectations as there is for the pupil whose progress to top grades always seemed more certain.
