About the school

  • Dorm facilities:
Our three boarding houses, Pollard, Pyke and Ruddle offer a real ‘home from home’ for all our boarding pupils, where they can relax, play and achieve. The houses have a warm, friendly atmosphere where pupils can feel happy, safe and secure. Each room has internet access making leisure time, study and communication easier and more enjoyable. The social areas are homely and comfortable and have all the necessary facilities to allow pupils to relax with friends, watch television and films, listen to music and play games. The houses have kitchen areas where pupils can prepare drinks and snacks. All of the school facilities are available for our boarders to use in the evenings and weekends and there is also an extensive selection of activities for them to choose from. The houses have the security of close supervision by our experienced and caring house staff and boarders are given the freedom to grow and mature within a ‘family environment’. Boarding life offers a healthy balance between working hard during the structured school day and the enjoyment of fun activities with friends during leisure time.

Sport and culture

  • Sport Facilities:
Pupils at Shebbear College enjoy an excellent programme of extra-curricular activities including many sports. Traditional sports such as rugby, hockey, netball, football, basketball and cricket are available according to the season, as are the excellent sporting facilities on offer to pupils, including our state-of-the-art gymnasium, dance studio, sports hall, all weather floodlit pitch and numerous playing fields. A variety of other physical activities are often available such as surfing, horse riding, hiking, table tennis, badminton, trampolining among others. Our fixture list for Games is extensive and competition is encouraged at all levels, giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and achieve their aims.  For boys the major games are rugby, football and cricket and for the girls major games are hockey, netball and rounders.  Rugby 7’s is also played by the boys during the Lent Term.  The sports department also runs many inter-house games making physical activity further accessible within the school.

  • Culture and arts:
Shebbear College has been awarded the Incorporated Society of Musicians’ Gold certificate in GCSE music, putting the school in the top 87 schools nationally.
Our pupils enjoy a wealth of extra-curricular music activities which include our Lower School Choir, Third Form Choir, Senior Choir, Orchestra, Flute Group, Saxophone Group, Brass Ensemble and String Group. The addition of our new music facility on campus allows our pupils to study, practice and perform in the most modern of environments. There is an established schedule of performances throughout the academic year with a wide variety in formality which allows all students to gain experience and to develop self-confidence.
