Shaftesbury School is one of mixed 11-18 boarding high schools in UK with excellent facilities on the edge of the ancient town of Shaftesbury, county of Dorset. The school benefits from an abundance of outdoor space for PE and games, reflecting its Sports College status. This is complemented by modern facilities including floodlit all-weather playing pitches, a superbly equipped fitness suite, climbing wall, gymnasium and dance studio. We are proud of our commercial catering facility with restaurant, and enviable facilities for Art and ICT. The former school chapel provides an atmospheric and unique venue for the teaching of Drama. We promote the highest expectations of our students, and encourage each individual to be the best they can be. At the heart of our school are the values of our Christian Foundation, the ideals of the Olympic movement and the spirit of internationalism. We encourage all students to take an active role in school life through our House system. On entry to the school students are assigned to one of four houses, each named after a famous Olympian – Thompson, Redgrave, Owens and Sanderson. Tutor groups comprise students from years 7 – 11, and older students act as mentors for younger students, encouraging and guiding them. Our boarding residence at Barton Hill House provides accommodation for over 100 boarders. Many of these students travel to us from all over the world, enriching our learning environment through their diverse cultures, faiths and traditions.

About the school

Dorm Facilities: Boarding at Shaftesbury School enjoys a well-established and rich heritage dating back to 1898. Barton Hill House, a short walk from the main School, was developed to accommodate boys and girls in 1994, and the school is proud to be one of only 38 state boarding schools in England. Following a £3 million refurbishment over the last few years, the Barton Hill House of today provides a modern comfortable home for over 100 students. The latest addition to the complex is a block of 24 en suite, single study bedrooms for sixth formers. This, coupled with the extensive refurbishment of all of the dining facilities and bedrooms in the main house, led Ofsted to declare the boarding facilities to be “Outstanding” in their report in 2011. The new facilities were officially opened in July 2012 by HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Why Should You Choose this School?

“A level and AS level results are above national average, even though the starting points of many students was below national average. The sixth form offers a wide range of courses to suit the needs of all students, with some completing work-related courses in one year and others taking academic courses over two years. Success rates are high. The sixth form is good and a particular strength of the school.”
