Introduction

Rydal Penrhos School is an independent boarding school in Colwyn Bay, North Wales. It is It is the only Methodist school in the independent sector in Wales. It is co-educational boarding school for boys and girls aged 11-18, although it has also nursery and Prep School. This top Wales boarding school offers the kind of education that any parent would wish for their child, in a stunning location that complements everything that takes place in school. From the Early Years and Pre-prep departments right up to the Upper Sixth, our pupils are rightly proud of the school, and their achievements during and after their time here are the best testimonial to what they have learned.     The common areas of the house include a library or study area, kitchens with the necessary facilities to make snacks and open common rooms.

    Bedrooms are bright, colourful and warm and the furnishings are sympathetically chosen for their appeal to young people.

    Sixth Form pupils who elect to board at the school are given single or double study bedrooms and greater responsibility for themselves in line with their age and increased responsibility. 

Social life & attractions

Pupils in Year 7 and 8 of this great boarding school choose from a carousel of subjects that typically includes: Dance Club, Fencing, Greenpower Project, Junior Drama, Mindfulness, Orchestra, Percussion group, Welsh, Ballet, Fives, Debating Club, Woodwind and Brass Group.
Year 9 of this Wales boarding school is offered a carousel of subjects that typically includes Maths π Club, French Culture Club, Textiles Club, Greenpower Project, Orchestra, Percussion group, Lefevre Erasmus and Mindfulness. Year 9 pupils also start their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, which many complete within a year.
Years 10 and 11 are offered a similar selection of enrichment subjects. In addition, many academic departments hold clinics for GCSE subjects, and extra subjects such as Latin, Chinese and Photography are also offered at this time. Many pupils take their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Awards during these two years.
There is a wide range of academic clinics for all Sixth form pupils, allowing extra one-to-one time with teachers if a pupil requires it. These include an evening session for Business Studies and Economics. In addition, the school runs Oxbridge test and university interview preparation sessions, opportunities for Community Service, time in the school’s Performance Centre (gym), and sports such as golf, tennis and cricket. Many pupils complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards by the end of their time at Rydal Penrhos.

    International pupils – the Pre-Sixth: The Pre-Sixth is a one-year course for pupils for whom English is not their first language. Successful completion of the course is the ideal preparation for Sixth form study at Rydal Penrhos School for both A-level and International Baccalaureate. The Sixth form at this top Wales boarding school provides a superb post-16 education in an environment that marries the best of the support structure, familiarity and leadership opportunities of a school with the difference and independence of a college setting. Furthermore we offer a broad selection of courses within either the A-level or BTEC curriculum and the Cambridge Technicals.

The school is within 45 minutes’ drive of Chester, Holyhead and Bangor, and there are fast rail links to London (under 3 hours) and the Midlands. Transfers from Manchester and Liverpool airports allow easy access from Europe and beyond, so boarding in one form or another is an attractive option for many families.
