Introduction

One of great boarding schools in England. King's Bruton is an HMC boarding and day school educating 340 boys and girls aged 13 to 18 in the strikingly beautiful Somerset town of Bruton. King's Bruton is worth considering if you are looking for an old famous British boarding school near London. Our most recent Ofsted and ISI inspections have rated our education as 'outstanding' and 'excellent' respectively. Our significant strengths include the school’s size, recent best ever academic results, and renowned pastoral care. Pupils of all abilities are nurtured and challenged, and we are proud of our nationally acknowledged record of adding value to each child’s performance in the classroom.

We have seven boarding Houses – four boys, three girls – in which boarders and day pupils are fully integrated, another major strength of the school. Boys and girls cannot get lost, hide or drift here. Pupils have opportunities to both participate and excel in sport, music, drama and a host of extra-curricular activities, ranging from kayaking to debating, horse-riding to critical thinking. Our Open Mornings are busier than ever and interest in the school is spreading far and wide. We would be delighted to welcome you.

Sixth Form

The Lower Sixth Project:  At the start of the Lower Sixth all pupils undertake a short research project based on an issue of question relating to one of their AS subject choices.  This undertaking is supported by a course of research skills sessions based on the University of East Anglia pre-U study skills programme.  The purpose of the project is three-fold:  to deliver a study/research skills programme to the pupils in relation to a 'live' piece of work; to highlight the heightened expectations regarding independent study at A Level and encourage positive working habits and time-management skills from the outset of the A Level course.

The Extended Project Qualification:  The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is offered to all Sixth Formers and is an opportunity to complete a 5000 word project or create an artefact (e.g. composition, model, performance) based on independent research.  In addition to the main project candidates complete a log-book detailing their working processes and decision-making encouraging meta-learning and critical thinking and deliver a presentation on the process and final product.  The EPQ is equivalent to an AS level with grades A* to E available, and is recognised by universities as demonstrating aspiration, intellectual curiosity and higher order study skills in pupils who achieve high grades.

Debating and Public Speaking:

In addition to a vibrant inter-house debating competition, senior pupils have the opportunity to participate in a number of external competitions and events.  Pupils currently participate in the English Speaking Union Schools Mace competition: the Oxford Schools debating competition and the Model United Nations.  In addition to developing skills in reasoning, argument and articulation these opportunities encourage pupils to foster an in-depth engagement with current world affairs and issues.

About the school

Long description:

The Learning Support Department

The School prides itself on the care and attention to detail given to pupils in the area of learning support. The Learning Support Department helps pupils with a range of mild to moderate special educational needs. Even the brightest of pupils may need support with their learning. For some pupils, a short burst of learning support may be enough, whilst for others LS lessons may continue throughout their time at King’s. Pupils are taught on an individual basis and lessons are timetabled to cause minimum disturbance to the rest of the curriculum.

All three members of the department hold the Certificate and Diploma in teaching students with special educational needs. Furthermore, all departmental staff have valuable experience as mainstream teachers of GCSEs and A-Levels as well as at Head of Department level. The department is situated at the heart of the School in the Hobhouse building. King’s is a Crested school and is therefore inspected specifically to ensure that SEND pupils are well supported in all aspects of school life.

All work in the department is closely linked to the challenges of the curriculum and pupils are encouraged to use skills learnt in LS in the mainstream classroom. Classroom teachers are involved in the creation of LS targets as well as making appropriate provision and adjustments to teaching which will lead to improved outcomes.
