Introduction

Kilgraston in Perth is girls boarding school in Scotland. Kilgraston in Scotland, UK is worth considering if you are looking for one of best British boarding school experience. One of the earliest mentions of ‘Gilgryston’ is in the records of the 13th century. The main building was built by Francis Grant of Glenlochy in the classic style of the Adam Brothers around 1800 and was a private house until the First World War when it was requisitioned and used as a hospital.

In 1930 the house and grounds were purchased by the Society of the Sacred Heart and opened as a school with 40 boarders. The Society is a religious order founded by Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800 to provide education for girls, and continues to have schools in over forty countries worldwide. The Society operated Kilgraston until 2000 when it became an independent Catholic charitable trust. A new chapel was consecrated in 1961, and the school has since been extended and kept up to date through our programme of continuous development to further our position as a centre of excellence for education in Scotland, whilst being mindful of maintaining our traditions and ethos.

About the school

Dorm Facilities:

From age 8, the girls reside together in small dormitories in ‘Butterstone’, the Prep boarding house. We recognise the importance of providing a comfortable, homely environment for the youngsters, many of whom will be away from their parents for the first time.

To accommodate the needs of younger children, the Preparatory School offers boarders a choice of Full, Weekly or Flexi boarding. Rates are available from the Bursar’s office.

There are also occasions when day girls wish to board for a night or two. We encourage this and a scale of charges is available from the Bursar.

Our highly professional, caring staff ensure that the girls feel welcome, happy and involved at all times, and there is always something fun on the calendar such as a party, outing or adventure to look forward to!

At 13, each girl is given her own study bedroom in ‘Mater’ the Senior house, so that she can have her own space to think, read, study or just enjoy time to be herself.

The Deputy Head (Pastoral Care and Boarding), House Mistresses and Residential Staff encourage a happy environment where the pupils can flourish in an atmosphere of tolerance, integrity, openness and thoughtfulness to others.

Kilgraston regards the pastoral care of its girls as fundamental and it is accepted by everyone at the school as key to the wellbeing and academic success of the pupil allowing her to develop her full potential whatever her academic ability.

Sixth Formers are accommodated in ‘Barat’ or ‘Swinton’ (part of our new Sixth Form Centre) and are accorded a degree of freedom and independence commensurate with their age. We offer a rich programme of extra curricular opportunities for our Sixth Form boarders, and have strong links with Edinburgh’s Merchiston Castle School for boys with whom we collaborate in drama productions, trips, dinners, sport, parties and more, ensuring that our students feel in no sense isolated by Kilgraston’s all-girl environment.

Culture and arts:

Participation in musical activities has been proven to significantly develop children’s social, cognitive and motor skills as well as foster greater teamwork. The benefits to children are extensive and the Music department in Kilgraston offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students of all ages.

The ability to perform in front of an audience is a difficult skill to master and regular rehearsals and performances improve confidence and self-esteem, helping pupils to develop a variety of skills that no classroom can teach. The experience of performing on stage can equip students with skills that will benefit them for many years in the future.

The Music Department is headed up by Andrew McGarva, Director of Music. Andrew is a graduate of the RSAMD where he studied Violin Performance with Warren Jacobs. He later completed his Postgraduate Certificate of Education and became Director of Music at Wellington School in Ayr where he stayed for 10 years before moving to be Head of Music at the British School in Tokyo. He returned to Scotland in 2009 to take up his post here at Kilgraston. Andrew has travelled the world through his music, conducting the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and performing as a soloist and with many different and varied ensembles.

Kilgraston has a legendary reputation for art where many past pupils have gained national recognition. There are opportunities to study fine art, ceramics, graphics and photography, and pupils are encouraged to experiment using new media.

The girls make regular visits to workshops, galleries, and exhibitions locally and nationally and practicing artists are frequently invited to the school to talk, give demonstrations and discuss techniques and ideas.

Art is a very popular choice at Kilgraston and girls can study it at Standard Grade, Higher, Advanced Higher and A-Level.

Drama is an important, popular and rewarding aspect of school life as well as featuring as part of the curriculum. Participating in drama activities is especially beneficial for developing communication and teamwork skills, whilst at the same time providing the girls with an enormous amount of fun.

The impressive and varied productions (which take place in the school’s new state of the art theatre) attract not only parents and friends, but also a wider audience drawn from the locality.

There are opportunities for those with thespian interests to become involved in the Senior School’s stunning drama and musical productions held biennially alongside the annual Prep School productions.

Private LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) classes leading towards examinations and awards offer another popular choice for pupils at Kilgraston who wish to further their interest.

Why Should You Choose this School?

Evidence shows that single-sex education is more effective for girls allowing them to excel in all areas of the curriculum. As Scotland’s leading all girls’ boarding school, Kilgraston recognises that girls mature differently from boys and provides an education geared to the individual needs of its pupils, with no limitations on their academic and personal ambitions.

That said, socialising is actively encouraged and there is a busy programme of joint events and socials with neighbouring schools, including the all-boys Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh (where there are reciprocal arrangements for fees).

Kilgraston encourages leadership, confidence, independence, integrity and an ambition to achieve, and has something to inspire every young woman, from rock climbing and karate; to photography and ceramics. This approach to education ensures that Kilgraston girls are well equipped for the modern world, whatever and wherever they want to be.
