About the school

Long description: ISAK is a fully-residential, 3 year boarding school located in beautiful Karuizawa, Japan. As an official International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, ISAK offers a curriculum in line with the IB philosophy of critical thinking that encompasses a broad range of fields, helping students learn how to connect academic knowledge in real world situations. We are proud to have a team of experienced educators from around the world who not only possess a high level of expertise in their respective fields, but are also inspiring guides in the classroom and thrive on day-to-day interaction with curious, energetic students.

Dorm Facilities:
 Since ISAK is a fully residential school, living in a dormitory or “Residence” is an important and enriching part of the ISAK experience. Each Residence is a row of connected townhouses that form a community. Each townhouse unit is home to 12 students from around the world. Residences are single sex, with male and female students living separately. Faculty members and their families also live in the Residences. Students share 2 or 4 person bedrooms inside their House. All of the student units a communal living room to enjoy relaxation and free time. The communal areas are also used for small classes, club meetings and seminars. Sun-filled lofts in each residence provide an additional study area for students.

Social life & attractions

Description: The ISAK campus is located in a beautiful mountain resort area just outside of Karuizawa, Japan – a one hour train ride from Tokyo station. Completed in 2013, the ISAK campus combines the historical elements of traditional Japanese design with modern, environmentally friendly construction. The buildings are nestled into the wooded landscape, creating a harmonious environment for both living and learning.

Sport and culture

Sport Facilities: The ISAK campus includes an outdoor sports field and a gym with full sized basketball court and volleyball courts. Students can participate in several intramural sports clubs including basketball, volleyball, soccer, running, and dance. ISAK is located in Karuizawa, a popular 4-season recreational destination in Japan. Karuizawa is the only town in the world that has hosted events for both the summer and winter Olympic games. In addition to campus sports clubs, students have access to many public recreation facilities in Karuizawa including swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, a down hill ski area and an ice rink built for the 1998 Nagano Olympic games

Summer Programs

Summer School:  ISAK offers a 2-week summer school for middle school students (7th – 8th grade). The Summer School allows participants to experience the academic environment and culture of ISAK High School. Attending summer school is not a prerequisite to enrolling in high school, but many summer school participants do apply for the high school program. Students represent a diverse range of countries, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds Through our leadership program, design-innovation course, and various classes and outdoor activities, the Summer School is designed to help middle school students realize their potential by providing an environment in which they can truly appreciate and understand global perspectives, while practicing how to identify and solve problems on their own, and developing the strength to overcome challenges.
