Introduction

Hazlegrove is an Independent Day and Boarding Preparatory School for 380 boys and girls aged 2½ to 13. The School is located in Yeovil, Somerset, England. The school is fortunate to have outstanding facilities and is set within 200 acres of parkland in Somerset with direct access to the A303. The families at Hazlegrove represent a wide cross-section of the community from local farmers and cheese-makers to metro-exiles and ex-pats choosing to colonise the South-West of England.
Year of foundation: 1519
Some history: The school’s history reaches back in time to 1519 during the reign of Henry VIII and as part of the King’s School, Bruton Foundation, Hazlegrove is part of an educational lineage which spans nearly five centuries. The school was founded by Richard Fitzjames (Bishop of London) and his nephew John Fitzjames of Redlynch (later to become Chief Justice of the King's Bench) whose family crest incorporated the bearded dolphin which remains part of our school crest today. After only twenty years of existence, the school was closed with the dissolution of the Monastries resulting with the surrender of the Abbey including all the endowments of the school to the King (Henry VIII until 1547, and then Edward VI, his son). For ten years the school ceased to exist until a "humble petition" was presented to Edward VI requesting him to restore the endowments of the school. This was granted with the school being called the Free Grammar School of King Edward the Sixth. This Royal Foundation led to a crown being placed above the dolphin on the school crest. The original endowments of the school were re-granted to a Corporation that was to consist of twelve governors. Indeed, we believe we may be the first school ever to have a Governing Body with an unbroken record of the proceedings of the meetings of the Governors dating back to 1553. The Junior School was moved to Hazlegrove House, after the Second World War in 1947, to be able to satisfy the increasing demand for places. Today, about half of the pupils leaving Hazlegrove continue their education at King's which is also co-educational and situated within the attractive town of Bruton, nine miles to the North East of Hazlegrove.

About the school

Long description: The Pre-Prep A purpose-built, self-contained Pre-Prep gives pupils the ideal start to their school careers. Classes are small with a generous teacher / pupil ratio. The Pre-Prep incorporates our Nursery where children can start from as young as 2 1/2 years old. For even younger children our Squirrels Parent and Toddler Group meets once a week. The Lower School Aged 7, the children move into the Lower School (Years 3 and 4). At this point they are classroom based with a class teacher for core subjects (such as English and Maths) and move around the school to be with specialist teachers for subjects such as French and Science. The Middle School Aged 9, the children progress to the Middle School (Years 5 and 6). Here they move around the school for each lesson and are taught by specialist teachers across the curriculum. Outdoor education is introduced into the curriculum during these two years and pupils start to learn Latin in Year 5. The Upper School The final two years in the Upper School at Hazlegrove (ages 11 to 13) are an exciting time. With a combination of hard work and fun, the children prepare for the move to their senior schools via Scholarship or the 13+ Common Entrance examinations. Early in the Autumn Term in Year 7, a trip to the River Dart enables the year group to bond and work on team building skills, welcoming new pupils who have joined us at this time. Moving On Pupils move on from Hazlegrove to a wide variety of Senior Schools. An impressive number of scholarships and awards have been gained in recent years across the board including academic, sport, music, art and design in addition to all round awards.
