Introduction

Are you looking for an English boarding school in China? Harrow International School Hong Kong has a fantastic offer! Our school is the third in the Harrow family of schools in the Asia region and we have recently opened with 750 students. At Harrow International you will find a distinctive and high quality education with a strong emphasis on the leadership and team-working skills we believe are vital in today’s world. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful new campus with a first-rate range of facilities.  The teaching force we have assembled has a tremendous blend of collective experience in excellent independent boarding and day, senior and prep schools in the UK and international schools in South East Asia. Our clear and distinctive mission statement, Leadership for a better world, underpins what happens in the classroom, in extra-curricular activities and pastoral care in the School. Collectively, we aim to develop in our students the desire and skills to make a positive difference through people to the communities in which they live.

Bringing elements of educational philosophy and practice from Harrow School in London to Hong Kong within our mission statement is a very exciting challenge. There are, of course, some ways in which the school is different from Harrow School in London: it is co-educational; it encompasses a much wider age range; it offers both boarding and day places; and it embraces its location in Hong Kong. However, many aspects of the school are characteristic of Harrow: high expectations of students and teachers; excellence in academic work; excellence and a high degree of participation in extra-curricular pursuits; high quality pastoral care; a genuine focus on the individual; and the development of leadership skills.

The quality of relationships and community life, and the personal formation of character are fundamental to the life of Harrow International School Hong Kong. Boarding, the heart of life at Harrow, is also integral to the life of our students in Hong Kong. From Year 6 when students enter the Upper School, pastoral care is centred on the boarding houses: all full boarders, weekly boarders and day students are members of a House. We work hard at establishing strong bonds within the communities of our Houses and the School. Above all, we aim to ensure our students are happy, secure and valued. It is important to realise that we are looking for students with the aptitude, ability and personality to make the most of the opportunities at the School. And through our scholarships scheme, we are looking to attract outstanding students who have the potential to act as significant leaders in academic work, cultural activity and sport in the School, irrespective of their parents’ financial circumstances.

About the school

  • Long description:

    The Preparatory Phase

In the Preparatory School, a skills-based curriculum is designed to manage the transition from the home room environment in the Pre-Prep School to the more subject-specific approach in the Senior School. The aim is to foster a love of independent learning and promote the skills required to achieve very high academic standards in the Senior School, Sixth Form and beyond Harrow International.

The approach is contemporary and research-based, while demonstrating academic rigour. Students in Year 8 start studying some IGCSE subjects for which they may sit examinations in Year 9. These may include Religious Studies, together with Global Perspectives and Science for the 21st Century. The latter two IGCSE courses apply some of the basic knowledge and skills gained during Years 6-7 in foundational humanities subjects and science to current contexts.

Students in the Sixth Form are expected to accept a greater level of responsibility for their own study as they prepare for the world of university beyond. Many of our students are expected to undertake the Extended Project Qualification and Critical Thinking as additional AS-levels.

While it is expected that the majority of students will aim to enter UK universities, opportunities to prepare for SAT examinations will be available for those wishing to make applications to American universities.
