The Middle School curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education. It ensures that pupils have a solid grounding in all the key subjects necessary for a proper education fit for someone living in the 21st Century but it also provides appropriate opportunities for choice and allows pupils to customise their subjects to suit their own strengths and interests. In the Third Form, all the major subjects are studied. Pupils choose two languages from French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. Latin is a popular choice but is not compulsory. In the Fourth and Fifth Forms, pupils study for GCSEs. English, Mathematics and Science are compulsory. Pupils choose four other subjects from a comprehensive range. Results at GCSE have been outstanding for many years. Last year, over 30% of all grades were A* and there was a 98% pass rate.
Sixth Form Boarding School
Fettes College is unique in Scotland in that it is the only school which offers a choice between the International Baccalaureate and A Levels Into the Sixth Form Boarding School. The IB is renowned throughout the world as a rigorous and challenging examination system that develops a broad range of skills. Students take six subjects for two years and have to study English, Mathematics, Science, a language (ancient or modern) and a social subject.
The A Level pathway can provide breadth, but it allows for specialisation in a way that the IB does not. Students study four (or sometimes five) subjects in the Lower Sixth Form before narrowing down to three (or sometimes four) subjects in the Upper Sixth Form.
With some forty different courses offered on two distinctive pathways, this top UK boarding school provides a superb opportunity to pursue all manner of interests. The UCAS tariff allows achievements to be measured across different examinations systems. The average UCAS points score by each Fettesian last year was 426 (that’s roughly the equivalent of 3½ As at A Level or 6 As at Higher), the best of any Scottish school. You can be certain that the Sixth Form education provided by us is first-rate.
