Introduction

DLD is an independent sixth form college situated on two campuses in the heart of London; Marylebone Campus and Belgravia Campus. A great sixth form boarding school in heart of England. Classes are small, enabling students and teachers to focus upon the most effective ways of learning. The College offers superb, modern teaching and resources in one of London's safest and most accessible areas, 5 minutes from Regent's Park, the Wallace Collection and the Wigmore Hall. As well as a satisfactory reference from the applicant's school, the entrance requirements to study academic A Levels at DLD are six C grades at GCSE, one of which must be in English Language or Mathematics. Students normally take four AS subjects in Lower Sixth, one of which will be dropped after AS exams. An increasing number of students join us at the start of Upper Sixth. They may have become disenchanted with their schools, or have been studying A Level subjects which they now regret taking. Others will have done less well in their AS exams than expected and it is felt that an intensive year preparing for A2 is needed to ensure the best possible A Level results. Some of these students will be recommended to follow a one year intensive A Level course if they have not satisfactorily mastered the content of the AS syllabus. Others will continue at A2 level in the normal way, and can retake AS modules if marks were disappointing. Where students have studied a syllabus on a different examining board, permission is usually granted by the receiving examining board to allow the AS result to be transferred to the A2 exam board. Students interested in any aspect of theatre should be encouraged to participate in our annual production mounted every Christmas in our theatre. Sports events take place every day Wednesdays and Fridays when transport arrives outside Bulstrode Street to take students to venues where football and basketball are practised. Floodlit football is played at the Westway Sports Centre. All students who sing or play an instrument and enjoy performing are encouraged to participate in the various college music activities.
Year of foundation: 1931
Some history:

DLD College London has a long, rich and vibrant history. Davies Laing and Dick, commonly known as DLD, was founded in 1931 to provide tutoring for Oxbridge and Colonial Service entrance exams.

After the Second World War the college specialised in A and O Level teaching. The public perception of DLD and other crammers, as they were known, was not always complimentary: dingy classrooms in badly lit attics, not much equipment, little music and less drama.

In the early seventies former student Martin Amis, in his first novel ‘The Rachel Papers’ described the tutors barely half a mile from Campden Hill Square where the aim of the tour of the school was nothing more ambitious …than to show me it wasn’t a workhouse or a blacking factory.

Academic English forms the educational foundation for any international student studying with DLD College Londyn , whatever course they follow, as English is the language for both teaching and learning.

Every student’s language target is to achieve a minimum of 6.5 in the IELTS exam (International English Language Testing System). It is compulsory to study this course until this is achieved, although we recommend students study beyond this score. There are various courses to follow to do this, depending on the English level at the start (which we will assess upon arrival).

The IELTS exam is as important as any A level subjects, Foundation course, BTEC qualification or GCSE and must be taken alongside these, because the demonstration of academic English skills of a certain level (generally 6.5) is a pre-requisite for entry to all good universities. Further to this, universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial and UCL often ask for 7.0/7.5.
