Dallam School in Milnthorpe, Cumbria is a great solution for those looking for affordable boarding school in UK. Dallam is one of best state boarding schools in England! PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A UK STATE BOARDING SCHOOL, APPLICATIONS WELCOMED ONLY FROM EU PASSPORT HOLDERS! We are proud of the quality of education Dallam gives to its students. Standards in external examinations are significantly higher than in most IB schools in the UK and students have very good attitudes to learning.
Our expectation is that all students will achieve to their full potential at 16 years old and that most will stay on to further study in years 12 and 13. Of those, the great majority will go on to university, with others going into high quality training and employment. Achievement at Dallam is broad. Whether through our extensive arts or sports programmes, we expect all students to contribute to the wider life of the school. Challenge and adventure, for example, through our Duke of Edinburgh Scheme is a particular feature of the school.
Dallam is different. As a long established specialist language college, and the first school in the country to be designated as an adventure learning school, we aim to be at the leading edge of developments in learning and teaching. We have a very healthy boarding section, with young people from around the world enriching enormously the cultural diversity of the school. Above all, we are a community school, meeting the learning needs of local people from pre-school to active retirement, and developing our learning programmes for 11 to 19 year olds within that wider community.
There has recently been a major building programme, providing the latest in educational facilities for our students. We want to remain a relatively small school, however, able to know all students as individuals whilst being large enough to offer the full range of educational opportunities, including a wide curriculum in years 12 and 13.

Dorm Facilities: Dallam is one of the few state schools to offer boarding places. This gives students who live further away access to an outstanding English education in a prestigious secondary school. Our boarders come to Dallam to get excellent GCSE, A Level or IB qualifications. It’s also an opportunity to develop personally and socially - an ideal bridge between home and university.
Set in beautiful Cumbrian countryside, Dallam Boarding offers a safe, rural environment but with lots for young people to do, such as outdoor adventure, sports, swimming, Army Cadets and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Boarders have easy access to the major cultural centres in the North of England such as Manchester and Liverpool.
Boarders are automatically given a place at the school. Judged to be outstanding by Ofsted, standards of teaching and academic achievement by students are very high. There are 1000 students in the school. This includes 250 in the 6th form which offers both International Baccalaureate and A Level programmes. There are excellent study facilities within the house, including wireless broadband for laptop computers. A study period each evening, “prep”, is supervised by boarding staff.
Fees are very much lower than in equivalent independent schools. This is because parents only pay for boarding accommodation. All educational costs relating to the school itself are paid by the State. Our state boarding school fees for 2013 are currently £9543 pa and £10740 pa for a Whitbarrow Room (Year 12 and 13 only).
Many boarders come from abroad or have parents who live and work outside of the UK. This creates a wonderful cultural mix. Because no one nationality dominates, English is firmly the medium of communication across the house.
