Introduction

Do you want to find the best boarding school in UK? You are in the right place. d'Overbroeck's College offer a great high school international boarding option.

Leckford Place offers a full and broad curriculum with a strong academic core. Although based on the National Curriculum, we tailor our offering to the needs of our pupils – so go significantly beyond national standards.

The curriculum covers the full range of subjects in the sciences, humanities, arts and modern languages – and includes music, drama and sport, both as curriculum subjects and as extracurricular activities.

Please click on the headings below to find out specific details of the curriculum studied by students in each year group.

Years 7-8

Classical studies

Latin is available, with Classical Studies as an alternative for those of a less linguistic bent.

Years 10-11

Years 10 and 11 are the GCSE years, and we offer a full range of options. Indeed, we endeavour to respond to pupil needs by defining our option blocks on the basis of the choices our pupils make. This means that the vast majority of students are able to pursue the GCSE courses most suited to their talents and ambitions.

Core (compulsory) GCSE subjects

In Years 10-11, all pupils take a compulsory core of three GCSE subjects: Maths, English and English Literature.

Additional subjects

In addition to the core subjects, students choose six further GCSE subjects from the list below:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • History
  • Geography
  • Religious Studies
  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Art
  • Classical Civilisation
  • Drama
  • ICT
  • Latin
  • Music
  • PE

When choosing from the above list, all students must include in their choice:

  • at least two Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • at least one Modern Language subject (French, Spanish, German)
  • at least one Humanities subject (History, Geography, Religious Studies)

Most students study 9 GCSEs, but more may be accommodated off timetable as after-school extras.

A levels at the Sixth Form

Our teaching style is predicated on highly interactive classes in which students are actively engaged throughout.

Our maximum class size in the Sixth Form is 10 - except in science subjects, where the maximum is 8. Working with relatively small groups means that we can teach and run our classes in the way that we like to. We want to be able to teach to each individual student in the class; we want to encourage questioning, debate and evaluative, critical thinking; and we want students to engage actively with the material, to hear, and to offer, alternative points of view.

Our approach to teaching has twin aims: we are intently focused on preparing our students for the task at hand, that is to say achieving to their full potential at A level; at the same time, we want to ensure that they acquire the academic skills and the self-awareness needed to become independent learners who are well prepared for the next stage in their lives.

In many ways, we believe in good old-fashioned teaching: where the teacher's role is to teach - that is to enthuse, to motivate and to foster a passion for their subject in their students; to convey the material clearly and compellingly; to create an environment in which students are curious to discover more; and to help develop the academic skills needed to do well at the end of the day.

At the same time, we want to help our students to become independent learners, because we believe that this is fundamental for success further down the track, both at university and in their future working careers.
