Cranbrook was one of the small number of Kent grammar schools founded in the Tudor period. Its history goes back to 1518. Since that date, the school’s biggest change has been that to co-education and 13+ entry in the early 1970s, together with more than doubling of size. The school is embarking on a period of similar development with its move to admit 11 year olds for the first time in over 40 years from September 2017.
There are six boarding Houses at Cranbrook: Cornwallis, Crowden and Rammell for boys, and Blubery and Scott for girls. In addition, School Lodge provides a Year 9 settling-in House for all boys entering Cranbrook aged 13.
Each House has its own head of house, matron and roster of duty staff made up of teachers and graduate assistants. In addition, each student is assigned a personal tutor who will play a pivotal role in assessing academic progress, course choices, sports participation and social interaction.
