Introduction

A great British boarding school in UK. Sixth Form, IB and A levels. High school boarding! Bromsgrove School is a big co-educational boarding school located in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.  Bromsgrove's Sixth Form is larger than most with some four hundred pupils. The School is deliberately configured so that many pupils can join us at sixteen. To a great extent, the academic results, IB, A level and BTEC options, Oxford and Cambridge successes, and fruitful applications to Russell group and other top universities account for this popularity. So does our insistence on independence not dependence. No spoon feeding.

Please see the link on the homepage (near the Headmaster’s signature) to read the Headmaster’s views on the IB / A level debate, but be assured that both options are available at Bromsgrove.

Lower Sixth pupils studying A level and BTEC qualifications must also participate in an enrichment Core Programme.  The aim of this programme is to allow Lower Sixth pupils the opportunity to develop their breadth of knowledge and understanding across a broad curriculum. Independent learning will be encouraged with a final extended project opportunity and a lecture week after the examination period in the summer.  All pupils will be able to take part in debates and also to experience more university-style lectures as part of the programme.

The bespoke Careers and UCAS Department is located in the busy Library Resource Centre, staffed with a full time, qualified Careers Adviser and a dedicated team of specialists to advise and guide students through their career at Bromsgrove and beyond.

University entrance is hugely successful with over 80% of students gaining their first choice place in a wide spectrum of courses and Higher Education institutions. Other students will take worthwhile Gap years or join business related apprenticeship schemes.

The School takes the preparation of pupils for Oxbridge entrance very seriously and, indeed, the programme for such pupils is a continuation of the extension courses we run from the Lower Fourth to the Fifth form.  Bromsgrovians have studied a huge range of subjects at Oxford and Cambridge, and that proud tradition continues today.

At a time when A level students have been competing harder than ever for University places, 80% of Bromsgrove pupils achieved their First Choice place at a British University in 2010. Of the 199 Upper Sixth pupils, over half went on to Russell Group Universities (with forty going to LSE, UCL and Imperial).

Some history: Bromsgrove is one of the UK’s foremost independent boarding schools – a charity governed by a board of Governors which was founded in 1553 in the North Worcestershire market town of Bromsgrove. Bromsgrove was one of the original HMC public schools and has a rich and successful history of producing well educated students who go on to top universities and beyond.
Campus size and facilities:

The School has invested heavily in new boarding, sports and academic facilities over recent years. State-of-the-art, architecturally striking facilities sit alongside a range of beautiful older buildings some dating back to the 1600s. Sports facilities rival any in the country; all boarding houses are either brand-new or completely refurbished; all academic buildings (including 18 new science laboratories and a spectacular library) are cutting edge and the campus has witnessed redevelopment on a scale unparalleled in its  history. However, it remains a peaceful 100-acre site full of trees, greens and playing fields.

What we offer?

University of London International Foundation Programme (IFP) at Bromsgrove School

University of London’s International Foundation Programme (IFP), will be studied over 2 terms, September to April, including 2 reading weeks and a break for the Christmas holidays. This course is aimed at students who are looking to attain entry to the best universities, having at least achieved well in 6 GCSEs or their local equivalent already. They must be between 17-19 years old by the December of the year they join, as this is closer to a Year 13 equivalent course, than Year 12. The application process will be very similar to the Sixth Form application. This university-focused programme offers the opportunity to develop the mind-set that these institutions are looking for, to debate and comment in an informed manner on topical subjects within the curriculum and study additional short courses independently online to supplement this. In this way it acts as the perfect bridge between a high school, where students are taught to memorise facts, and a university course, where students are expected to think for themselves, learn independently and discuss intelligently within a seminar environment. Applicants require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 to gain entry, as they need to be able to participate actively from day 1, although they will surely gain further confidence during their stay. They will receive extensive support towards further IELTS testing at the end of the course, in order to support their university applications. This course has already been operating in the UK for years, and the University of London have some information available on the UK degree courses that IFP graduates have joined here, https://london.ac.uk/sites/default/files/leaflets/ifp-student-offers.pdf.

The total cost for this course is £32,000, which includes a fee of £1,785 to the University of London, all tuition, books and full boarding while they are studying here. Students will have the opportunity to participate in many of Bromsgrove School’s excellent extra-curricular activities, as well as benefiting from our excellent pastoral care, EAL department, and the opportunity to work with our careers tutors to create successful university applications. The final exams in April are set and marked by the University of London and graduation will be at the Barbican, London.
