Black Forest Academy is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International, the Council of International Schools, and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. The curriculum is designed to be challenging and rigorous in accordance with the standard of excellence at Black Forest Academy. In addition to the core academic subjects such as Bible, Math, English, History, Science and Foreign Languages, students are offered elective courses which include Geography, Apologetics, Environmental Science, Journalism, Creative Writing, Graphic Design, Computer Programming, Industrial Arts, Statistics, and Economics. Black Forest Academy maintains a library of college catalogs and assists students with college planning. BFA is a site for PSAT, SAT, ACT, CLEP, and Advanced Placement exams, and makes arrangements for students to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Black Forest Academy (BFA) provides a quality, international Christian education that equips its students to influence their world through biblical thought, character, and action. BFA was founded in 1956 by TeachBeyond, formerly Janz Team Ministries. It is an international Christian school providing an English language education for grades 4 through 12 (grade 1-3 are bilingual—English and German). It serves the children of international Christian workers and international business families who want a North American curriculum that incorporates a Christian worldview. The residences are located in the numerous villages surrounding Kandern, Germany. Each residence builds community and creates its own identity through traditions, weekly dorm fellowship times, and special celebrations throughout the school year. Boarding life strives to emulate an atmosphere that encourages and stimulates good interpersonal relationships and acceptance of others. BFA provides a Christian elementary and secondary education primarily for children of missionaries in Europe and North Africa. Approximately 10 percent of the students are children of North American expatriates employed at area businesses. The student population is representative of roughly 50 countries. BFA is staffed by mission societies, and Biblical principles are integrated into the college preparatory curriculum. Preparation for the Advanced Placement exams is available. BFA offers an American-style college preparatory program, leading to a US high school diploma. Six AP courses are offered. As a general rule, students are allowed a maximum of two AP courses per year. Graduates go on to study at American and international post-secondary schools. Extracurricular activities play an important role at BFA and include: student council, newspaper, drama productions, Basel outreach team, spring mission/service trips, choir, string ensembles, dorm and class parties, field trips, and local cross-cultural opportunities. Our athletic program offers a variety of sports teams: volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, and wrestling. School athletic teams compete with Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DODDS). The total number of high school students is 232 including 60 in Grade 12, 67 in Grade 11, 67 in Grade 10, and 38 in Grade 9. The average class size is 12.6. Students attend from more than 52 countries throughout Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Africa. Approximately 78.7% of the student body is Caucasian, 15.1% Asian, 1.6% African, 0.6% African American, 1% Hispanic, 3% other. Residence dorms house 48% of the student body. From the Class of 2011, 80% are attending a 4-year program, 8% are in a 2-year program, 12% are in a gap year. The school currently enrolls 310 students on 3 campuses with the elementary and middle school located in a nearby village. Grades 9-12 are in two buildings which include 27 classrooms, three science laboratories, three art studios, a graphic arts room, an independent living room, a gymnasium, an auditorium, a library, an industrial arts room, a student center, five private music studios, a multi-purpose room, a tennis court, and a fitness room.
