How does the boarding school application process work?
When we receive your enquiry form, our Educational Parent Advisors will contact you to clarify important information about your daughter or son.
You will be asked to give us the necessary details – names, date of birth, and gender – so we can see what year group your child needs to apply for. We also need the information about the academic, sport, music and arts preferences of the child. You fill in a proforma, which helps you to tell us all details about your child's profile.
We also need to know what is the level of language proficiency presented by your child. Many bilingual top boarding schools require a good level of one language knowledge together with another which can be improved whilst studying at the boarding school.
If the level of language proficiency is too low we will advise either International Study Center registration for some time or attending our recognized summer or winter junior language courses.
We will need to see the school reports, reviews and teacher/school references, together with a personal statement written by the student. This personal statement or CV written by the student plays an important role in finding more about your child and school often want to have a look at it.
We will then search for schools that meet your preferable criteria, and will send the school profiles we think you may like for you to read through and digest.
If you have any questions about the schools at this point, our Educational Parent Advisors will be delighted to assist you by phone or email. When you are happy with the school choice, we do ask that you return to Best Boarding Schools with the application form to apply for a place at the school, so that we can continue to assist you further with the application process.
You will then receive a school registration form to complete and pay for (the international student registration fee costs between 100 and 1000 GBP) paid directly to the chosen school. At this stage, the majority of schools will require an entry testing to be completed.
This can be done overseas, or at the student’s current school. Some schools will agree for a Skype interview and will send their exam papers to be completed by e-mail. Some schools agree that we can evaluate your child capabilities!
Sometimes the student will be invited to visit the school abroad and be interviewed. Your child can register at any number of independent schools on your shortlist.
Once you have registered, your child has been tested and an offer made, a deposit is required to accept and secure the place. This is generally one term’s school fees, plus one term’s school fees to be paid by the first day of term. Deposits are refunded at the end of a student’s schooling, less any money outstanding on your account and assuming that proper notice has been given. Some boarding schools will want a year school fees to be paid upfront to speed up the visa application process. You will also need to cover the cost of medical insurance.
Your child is now admitted to boarding school in your chosen destination.
Best Boarding Schools are pleased to offer further services during your child schooling such as learning English and other languages via summer programmes, summer boarding camps and courses, guardian and home stay services, as well as arranging for additional private tutors, airport pickup and visits logistics etc.
